I hate to break it to you, but you’re going to go through quite a bit of embarrassing moments in your life. Some of them you might see coming, and other ones will come out of nowhere. Unfortunately, this stuff will happen… forever. Sorry. Eventually you’ll laugh about them more than you’ll cry, but for now, it sucks the most. When you’re in high school, embarrassing moments, even small ones, can see like the absolute WORST. Maybe it’s because you’re always surrounded by angry teens who are judgey and mean (sometimes), or maybe it’s because being a teen is the first time you’re really “self aware.” Either way, we all go through humiliating moments, and there is simply no way to avoid them.
I know that people saying “It happens to everyone! Don’t worry about it!” isn’t really what you want to hear, but it’s true. Plus, they really do make for the best stories later on in life. I mean, I personally would have nothing to talk about to make people laugh if I did not have my most awkward and embarrassing moments to reflect on. Even if you don’t believe me, take a look at these humiliating things that everybody goes through in high school that will, probably, happen to you at some point. And that’s okay!
1. Acne. Everywhere.
Recently, Kendall Jenner wrote a blog post about how embarrassed she was that she had acne in high school. It sucks, but it happens to practically everyone on Earth. When you’re growing up, your hormones are going wild and your skin can get bad – for some, it’s worse than for others.
2. Not having a bae.
I didn’t have a boyfriend for most of my high school career, and at the time it was the most embarrassing thing EVER. Fortunately, you will come to realize that everybody will be single at some point in their life, and that’s 100 percent fine. In fact, it’s awesome, since relationships can be messy AF. Embrace your singleness!
3. Accidentally liking someone’s Instagram….while they are in the same room as you.
Listen, we ALL Instagram stalk. Why are we pretending we don’t? So, you liked your crush’s Insta from 70 weeks ago. Yes, it’s humiliating, but it does put you on their radar, right? It doesn’t have to be terrible.
4. Wearing the same outfit as someone else.
I don’t know why we all pretend that we don’t all shop at the same stores. There is nothing embarrassing about wearing the same Urban Outfitters cardigan as someone else. I mean, it might feel silly, but you will get over it. It just means you and your classmates have good taste.
5. Outfit repeating.
Do people really expect you to have a new outfit for every day of the school year???? Nope. When I was in high school, I was constantly raiding my sister’s closet trying to put together an outfit that nobody has seen on me. Let me just tell you that people probably don’t notice or care how often you wear your favorite pair if jeans. It’s fine.
6. Not knowing the answer to a question.
You’re at school to learn. If you don’t know every answer, it’s okay. Don’t feel discouraged or embarrassed. I know you think your crush is judging you for not knowing the answer to an obscure math question, but it’s okay. Just keep on studying so you’re prepared for next time.
7. Asking someone for a tampon.
YES. This happens. People get periods. It can be embarrassing to draw attention to it, but it happens. Any other person who gets their period will relate. And if boys try and make fun of you for it, remind them that you are strong AF for dealing with your period and still going to school. That is HARD.
8. Pooping in school.
It’s not IDEAL, but sometimes it needs to happen. That’s all I have to say about that.
9. Having a crush on a teacher.
I’m not saying it’s okay, but it’s totally normal to have a crush on your teacher…as long as you don’t pull an Aria and start dating them.
10. Running into a guy you hooked up with once in the hall.
I mean, it was bound to happen. Just give them a nod and get it over with. If they try to talk to you, say you’ve got somewhere to be. Unless you WANT to talk to them, then by all means go for it.
11. Saying “bye” to someone while leaving the classroom, then walking the same way as them.
I don’t know what it is about this strange phenomenon, but it happens to us all. You’re talking to your semi-friend (you know, someone you’re not really close with, but talk to anyway) and then say “see you later!” but both start walking in the same direction. Then one of you tries to walk faster and get ahead. It’s awkward. It happens. Just let it happen.
12. Having to redo your makeup in the bathroom.
Okay, nobody really thinks that you wake up with perfectly read lips and lined eyes. And nobody expects that makeup to last all day. So, you need to redo your makeup sometimes, and sometimes someone walks in on you. It’s not the end of the world.
13. Sitting alone for lunch.
I mean, your goal is to sit with your friends, but maybe they’re all busy or have a different lunch schedule than you. It sucks, but sometimes you need to sit alone. If we’re being honest, I spent most of my lunch periods alone since I hate eating around other people. It was a good break from the chaos of high school, TBH. You might think people are judging you but whatever. You do you.
14. Your parent coming to drop off your homework/lunch/medicine/etc.
We all have parents. They’re all embarrassing. You’ll get through it.
15.Taking the bus home.
I don’t know about you, but in my school, it was super ~embarrassing~ to take the school bus. I guess it meant that you weren’t old enough to get your license, or you didn’t have cool friends with a car. Whatever the reason is, it’s okay to take the bus. It’s pretty convenient, IMO.
16. Your sister/brother/sibling spilling a secret about your life to your crush.
My sister used to tell all of my friends that it took HOURS to do my hair in high school. To be fair, it did, but I needed it to be some BIG secret. Looking back on it, I shouldn’t have gotten mad, because this stuff happens to everyone. We all take a long time to get ready. It’s FINE.
