When I look back on 2016, most of the bad stuff comes to mind. I mean, it makes sense, since the last twelve months have just been a string of one bad thing after another. Things like the whole Harambe disaster, Fifth Harmony becoming Fourth Harmony (?), and, you know, the whole election thing that I don’t really want to talk about right now. It takes a minute to think about some actually good things that came out of 2016. After literal hours of contemplation (not an exaggeration), I discovered that there were some people who actually kicked ass in 2016, specifically women. And these women made the year actually semi-okay.
I know we talk a lot about how awful 2016 was, and I don’t want to take away from how TRULY weird this year was, but there are some badass females who made the year just a little bit better. Whether it was speaking out about sexual assault, or shutting down gross and misogynistic males, these ladies truly killed it in 2016, and I wanted to pay tribute to them by rounding up their most badass moments. If 2016 proved anything, it’s that we NEED girls like this in our lives to balance out the good and the evil. So, if you want to be inspired to run the world in 2017, take a look at these amazing female celebrities who were tough AF in 2016:
1. Lucy Hale
— Lucy Hale (@lucyhale) December 23, 2016
For some reason, some gross person decided to leak naked pictures of Lucy online. Instead of letting it being her down, Lucy handled it in the best way possible by posting this powerful letter NOT apologizing for living her life. Honestly, good for her! I’m not saying you should go around taking and releasing naked pictures of yourself (don’t do that…please) BUT, she handled the haters in the best way possible. Go Lucy.
2. Ariana Grande
— Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) December 28, 2016
2016 became the year that I unapologetically fell in love with Ariana Grande. Her new album was amazing, and her response to gross dudes objectifying her was ICONIC. When a guy went up to her BF Mac Miller and talked about Ari like she was a piece of meat, she shot back on Twitter in the best way. On a related note, Dangerous Woman was one of the best albums of 2016.
Okay, there will never be a year where Beyonce DOESN’T kick ass, and 2016 was no exception. Queen Bey released the I C O N I C album Lemonade that was empowering to so many people this year. She was also actively involved in politics, and inspired a whole new generation of young girls who will slay for the rest of their lives.
thank you billboard❤️ tonight I got to speak my truth. thank you for supporting me through this time. it has been very emotional and at times I feel so lost. but tonight reminded me that I’m worth it, and to not give up. I can’t let myself down and I can’t let down my animals.

Kesha KILLED it this year. In the midst of an awful legal battle with her alleged abuser, Dr.Luke, Kesha did not stay quiet in 2016. She was constantly speaking out about her abuse and helping others who experienced trauma. Honestly…she is my idol.
5. Lady Gaga
— xoxo, Joanne (@ladygaga) January 14, 2016
Lada Gaga stayed relatively quiet most of the year, but she earns a spot on our list because of her inspiring performance at the Oscars earlier this year. She performed her song “Til It Happens To You” on stage with a group of sexual assault survivors. I get chills every single time I watch it. She stood up for victims of assault on national television, and if that isn’t kicking ass, I don’t know what is.
6. Chrissy Teigen
what in the…she can do whatever she wants…people really reaching for outrage here https://t.co/vLMNJCiP6S
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 25, 2016
For some reason, Chrissy Teigen is always attacked on Twitter for the weirdest stuff, but she always fights back in the best way. This year, Chrissy had a baby (who is the cutest on the planet, but anyway) and unfortunately received a lot of hate for how she treats her baby. BUT, she was always quick to defend herself to the Twitter haters, which makes her badass AF.
7. The Final Five
8. Shailene Woodley
— Shailene Woodley (@shailenewoodley) October 20, 2016
It’s important for stars to use their platform and celebrity status to speak out against political issues, and Shailene Woodley definitely did that this year. She actually got arrested for protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, which helped bring the issue to her younger fans.
9. Hillary Clinton
“To all the little girls watching…never doubt that you are valuable and powerful & deserving of every chance & opportunity in the world.”
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) November 9, 2016
We all know the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, but we can still celebrate the fact that Hillary went up against one of the worst men (of all time) and did not back down.
10. Selena Gomez
— Stunning Vocals ?? (@thebestvocal) November 21, 2016
After being absent from the the spotlight for most of the year, Selena came back with a powerful speech where she insisted that just because you are broken, doesn’t mean you have to stay broken. I’m INSPIRED.
11. Kim Kardashian
Even though many will say that Kim K has no talent, she actually made $160 MILLION off of her super-popular app in 2016. So…yeah, she totally kicked ass in the business world. She also survived a brutal attack in Paris which just proves she is strong AF.
12. Michelle Obama
— Hollywood Reporter (@THR) July 26, 2016
Not going to lie, every time I hear Michelle Obama speak I get choked up. She delivered this powerful speech that where she said the iconic phrase: “when they go low, we go high” AKA, we should never back down from a fight. I’m getting choked up just thinking about this.
