I have a love/hate relationship with celebrities. On the one hand, I love how entertaining they can be. On the other hand, they can be problematic AF. Example: I genuinely love Taylor Swift’s music. But when she does dumb things… I have to admit that she can be a bit of a mess. Honestly, most celebrities are. TBH, most people are offensive at some point in their lives. It’s one thing for someone to be offensive and learn from it – part of growing up is changing things after learning from our mistakes. But most of time, celebrities are offensive and don’t learn from it.
I get that celebrities are in the spotlight a lot, meaning that everything they say and do can be twisted to seem worse. Sometimes they might say things they don’t really mean, or they might say things that get completely taken out of context. Sometimes they might be saying things out of ignorance or just because they aren’t thinking carefully enough – but that doesn’t really make it okay. Sure, I love Jennifer Lawrence’s movies and idolize her hair on a regular basis, but that doesn’t mean I can’t admit that she can be suuuuper offensive. The worst part is that she just doesn’t seem to get it. It’s important to call out the disrespectful behavior of celebs so that they can be held responsible for their actions. It’s important to speak out and get angry when they say or do dumb stuff. It nobody stops them, it just makes them and their fans think it’s okay to be offensive, when it obviously isn’t. So, take a look at some of the most offensive things celebrities said this year so you can learn who to hold accountable!
1. Jennifer Lawrence disrespecting Hawaiian culture:
it doesn’t get more white and evil than Jennifer Lawrence. like. she really thought this was funny…. pic.twitter.com/mKL8WGBk3l
— Richey Collazo ?? (@RicheyCollazo) December 7, 2016
This was so weird and awkward. Jennifer admitted to rubbing against a sacred Hawaiian rock to scratch her butt, then played it off like it was some funny joke, and not a super offensive act. First of all, why did she think doing that in the first place was okay? And second, why would she tell the story as if it’s hilarious and not straight up rude? She released a sort-of “apology,” but people were still pissed. I used to like her, but now I just can’t.
2. Hilary Duff and her boyfriend dressing as a Native American and a pilgrim for Halloween:
I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume. It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my ❤️sorry.
— Hilary Duff (@HilaryDuff) October 30, 2016
I think I speak for everyone when I say that we were ALL rooting for Hilary Duff, but she and her then-BF disappointed us with her Halloween costume this year. She did apologize, but the whole thing was a mess.
3. Jennifer Lopez saying “All Lives Matter”
— Wanna (@WannasWorld) July 12, 2016
Come on, JLO. She used the phrase “All Lives Matter” to promote her new single, which was gross and insensitive to the Black Live Matters movement. She was basically using political issues to sell her new song. She did delete the tweet, but it still sparked outrage for good reason.
4. Literally ANYTHING Donald Trump said
I don’t even want to go into this again.
5. Playmate Dani Mathers posting a photo of a naked woman on her Snapchat
— ktms1 (@ktms1) July 14, 2016
TBH I didn’t even know who this person was before this happened, but apparently she’s a model who loves to shame women’s bodies. She posted a photo of a naked older woman on her Snapchat with the caption “If I can’t unsee this, neither can you,” which is rude AND illegal. She got kicked out of her gym for it, but I’m sure the poor woman in her picture was still scarred.
6. Selena Gomez being a hypocrite on social media
Selena has had a tough year (she was in rehab for a few months, among other things), but this moment still wasn’t great. After Taylor Swift was called out by Kim Kardashian-West for lying about Kanye West, Selena stood up for her friend with a tweet criticizing people for focusing on Taylor instead of more important issues in the world. Okay, fair, but… Selena never speaks up about important issues, so her tweet came across as really hypocritical. And then, when someone asked her to speak up about Black Lives Matter or police brutality, she snapped back at them. It was just a mess.
7. Amy Schumer recreating Beyonce’s Formation music video… and being racist AF
Amy Schumer uses the facets of Black womanhood that serve her best while casting Black women as extras and props in centering her own body
— My Prez Is Still Blk (@FeministaJones) October 25, 2016
It’s one thing to do a cover of a song, it’s another thing to take a very powerful song sung by a very powerful black woman and turn it into some sort of joke. The video has since been removed from YouTube.
8. Lena Dunham’s dumb Halloween costume
A photo posted by Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) on
I get that people were outraged when Donald Trump’s “grab her by the you-know-what” comments were leaked, but that doesn’t mean that you should turn his statement into a joke. Sexual assault it very serious and not funny, and it seems like she was trying to make light of a serious subject. Naturally, fans were upset, but Lena didn’t feel the need to apologize.
9. When Justin Bieber got DREADLOCKS
when zendaya had dreads people were saying she “smells like weed” but when justin bieber does the media loves it?? pic.twitter.com/fUaoo5AJdT
— jade (@comicwade) April 4, 2016
How could any of us forget when J.Biebz wore his hair in dreadlocks? Maybe you don’t actually remember since he deleted his Instagram, but I remember when he did it and didn’t care that he was appropriating black culture. Maybe it’s good that his Instagram is deleted for 2017?
10. Ryan Lochte lying about being robbed
Ryan Lochte lied about a night on the town to his mom and started an international incident. I’m dead.
— Ashley Weatherford (@sincerelyash) August 18, 2016
Ryan Lochte claimed he was robbed in Rio during the Olympics, but in reality, he was actually just being drunk and dumb. His comments, which were meant to protect himself so that he didn’t look like a jerk, made Rio look bad and came off as arrogant and gross. So, he was rude and lied about it, and was able to still get a spot on last seasons Dancing With The Stars. Okay.
11. Gregg Sulkin selling these stupid hats
— Gregg Sulkin (@greggsulkin) October 19, 2016
Using the serious issue of sexual assault to sell something is… disgusting. You shouldn’t be grabbing anyone by anything. Also, the fact that a man is selling these is jut annoying.
12. Zac Efron celebrating his Instagram fame… in a weird way.
gotcha but if u had 2 pick 1… “@ZacEfron: I’m grateful for a couple things today: Martin Luther King Jr & 10 million followers on IG ☝?✊?”
— Pillar Point (@Pillar_Point) January 19, 2016
Praising Martin Luther King Jr. – cool. Praising him and boasting about your followers at the same time? Not so cool. Like… what? What do those two even have in common?
13. Mischa Barton doing…this
I get that she was trying to speak out about police brutality, but why did she pair it with a photo of herself drinking wine on a boat in a bikini? It was weird, and she came off as a privileged, ignorant white woman. She did apologize for it later, but let’s be real, the damage was already done.
14. Lena Dunham accusing a football player of NOT wanting to have sex with her
Lena Dunham is the epitome of hypocritical sexism. She conjures up dialogues stemming from her own insecurities to put OBJ on blast. Sad.
— Michael Boswell (@michael_boswell) September 2, 2016
This whole things was SO weird. Basically, Lena Dunham wore a suit to the Met Gala, where she sat next to Odell Beckham Jr. She told a story about how Odell wouldn’t speak to her or even look at her because she was wearing a suit, making it seem like he was rejecting her and thinking she was gross and not worth his time. In actuality, Odell didn’t say or do anything to make her think that, and Lena ended up blaming it on her own insecurities. People were rightfully offended that Lena projected those insecurities onto a black male, using racial stereotypes for her own benefit.
