This year was awful, but what is perhaps even more awful is how fast time is going by. Like, wasn’t yesterday just August? Doesn’t it seem like 2007 was a week ago? The early 2000s were so much easier than 2016. A simpler, nicer time, when Donald Trump was just an annoying reality TV show host, and not the president-elect of the United States. If only we knew then what we know now, am I right? But anyway, back to my nostalgia rant.
When I was little, I always thought how weird it must have been when my dad said he was meeting up with a friend from college who he hasn’t seen in 10 years. I used to think that 10 years was a LONG time, but now that I’m older, I’ve learned that it actually isn’t. I mean, a decade sounds like a lot, but when you think about all of the stuff that happened 10 years ago, it doesn’t really seem like that long ago. It seems weird to think back on certain times of our lives and think, “oh, yeah, that was 10 years ago,” and yet, there are some things that you might not realize were actually that long ago. It used to make me sad, but now it just makes me excited for all of the stuff that could change in 10 years. Who knows, maybe Kim Kardashian can be elected the next president, right? Well, maybe not, but take a look at all of these things that will make you feel old AF in 2017:
1. iPhones turn 10 years old.
Did you know that the iPhone will turn 10 in 2017? Did you have to google that to make sure I was right? Don’t worry, I did too. Although it seems like we’ve had iPhones forever, I wouldn’t have guessed that they’ve been around for 10 years. But, alas, they have been.
2. Harry Potter ended 10 years ago.
Take a deep breath, because this one might shock you: the last Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, came out in the summer of 2007, which means that it’s almost 10 years old. In addition to that, the fifth movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix also came out that summer. LOL, do you feel like your childhood is ruined yet? I know I do.
3. Britney Spears had a meltdown 10 years ago.
You know that old saying, “If Britney Spears can make it through 2007, you can make it through this year” that everyone loves to throw around on the internet? It was due to Britney’s infamous meltdown that took place in 2007…AKA, 10 years ago.
4. Skins also turns 10.
Your fave British teen drama turns 10 in January. That stresses me out because I remember being a teen looking up to these weirdo characters, and now I am older than all of them. WTF.
5. And The OC ended.
RIP to the best teen TV drama of all time. The show ended in 2007 after a rough fourth season that, TBH, nobody really liked. Still, it will live on as the show that popularized the phrase “Welcome to the OC, bitch.” Classic.
6. High School Musical 2 was released 10 years ago.
I know we all celebrated the 10-year reunion of the first HSM in 2006, but the second one followed closely behind and aired in the summer of 2007. It actually became the most-watched made-for-TV movie at the time, with over 17 million people tuning in. I was obviously one of them.
7. Gilmore Girls ended then too.
Although, as we all know, Gilmore Girls was recently revived, it originally ended its run in May 2007. Even though, let’s be real, a lot of us don’t like to count the seventh season because it was so weird. But ANYWAY.
8.”Umbrella” by Rihanna came out a decade ago.
Way before her relationship (?) with Drake, Rihanna released her ~iconic~ album Good Girl Gone Bad in 2007, an released Umbrella as a single. The rest was history. I will literally never be able to think about an umbrella without getting that song stuck in my head for days.
9. Paris Hilton went to jail 10 years ago.
Remember when Paris Hilton went to jail? That was 10 years ago in June, folks! I guess that’s also when Paris Hilton was still relevant.
10. Hannah Montana was finishing up her tour.
Did anyone go to the Best of Both Worlds tour?? I was unable to get a ticket because it sold out SO FAST. But, yeah, that was 10 years ago.
11. The Jonas Brothers released their first album.
Way back in 2007 when the Jonas Brothers were actually still together, the released their self-titled album. Who could forget the CLASSIC single SOS? BRB, going to listen to that right now.
How old do you feel after reading this? What did we miss? Tell us in the comments!
