9 Things That Happened In 2016 That You Already Forgot About

There are some things we will never, ever in a million years forget about 2016: the presidential election, the upsetting amount of police brutality, and of course, the whole Harambe fiasco. But then, there are also things that happened in 2016 that you totally forgot about already, and maybe won’t live in your memories forever compared to other, bigger things. For example, remember the weird and kind of gross 100 layer makeup challenges? Or that time that Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar? Sure, it was earlier in the year, but it totally happened, and we were all obsessed with it when it was relevant, but it simply doesn’t matter anymore.

Thinking back on the year, it’s weird to remember stuff that happened only a few months ago, even though it feels like it happened years ago. 365 days might not seem like a lot, but when you think about what actually went on during the last 12 months, it can be easy to forget the smaller things in relation to the bigger ones. I mean, I can’t blame you – there has been a lot going on, perhaps even too much. So, before this disaster year ends and we attempt to move on, take a look at these nine things that you totally forgot happened in 2016.

1. #SaveMarinaJoyce

Remember that time everyone thought that a popular Youtube beauty vlogger was being held hostage? The internet went wild when Marina started acting off in her videos. Her fans came up with crazy theories that involved her being kidnapped and then held hostage, making videos against her will and trying to get help with little messages that were easy to miss. The #SaveMarinaJoyce hashtag went viral, so much so that police actually showed up to her house to make sure she was okay. She turned out to be fine, we think, but for a whole 24 hours or so, everyone on the internet suddenly became a detective.

2. Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go was big for like… a week? A month? Remember how this silly game actually got everyone outside, and how some parks were becoming overcrowded because of it? How pure. Sure, people still play it, but the hype has since died down for the virtual pet catching game. I have to admit, I also played it for about a day, but totally forgot about it until just now.

3. Ken Bone

The wholesome man in a sweater became an internet meme during the second presidential debate and honestly, he was the only good thing that came out of the election.

4. Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris’ Breakup

Yes, Tay dated someone before her weirdly public relationship with Tom Hiddleston. Remember Tayvin? Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris dated for 15 months before calling it quits at the beginning of the summer, but you probably already forgot about that, since she quickly moved on to Tom Hiddleston. More power to you, Tay.

5. Michael Phelps Meme

Remember the Olympics? I KNOW, I almost forgot about them too. Michael Phelps also became a meme when he made this overly aggressive expression while waiting for his race to start. Sure, he actually did really well and won a ton of medals, but #PhelpsFace was the biggest takeaway of the Olympics for like a week.

6. #LochteGate

Ah, Ryan Lochte. Olympic medalist and known liar. Lochte unintentionally started drama this summer when he falsely claimed that he was mugged in Rio during the olympics, when he was actually just being a drunk dude. The world was mad at him for a few days, but then he went on Dancing With The Stars and everybody forgot about it.

7.Sad Ben Affleck

Does anyone remember Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice? Probably not, because I don’t think anybody I know even saw it. But what was arguably more popular than the movie itself was the face Ben Affleck made when he realized that nobody actually enjoyed the movie. It’s a classic video that you totally forgot about, but I am happy to bring it to your attention again.

8. 100 Layers Challenge

I, for one, am relieved that everybody forgot about this trend because it was weird AF. People would apply 100 layers of EVERYTHING on their skin for no reason other than to film it and put it on youtube. Thank goodness it stopped and everyone continues on with their lives because I couldn’t handle any more of those videos.

9.Leonardo DiCaprio Won An Oscar

As much as the world loved to make jokes about Leo, once he actually won the Oscar, everybody forgot about it. The jokes for funny for a minute, but then Leo’s academy award fame quickly disappeared. Sigh.
