In high school, I was always super jealous of all of the girls my age who had chic and expensive designer bags, while I was stuck with my hand-me-down totes and clutches from my older sisters. I would have some boring, mono-colored bag, while all the “cool girls” had flashy bags with cute patterns and designs. I would have loved to be able to buy one of those but, unfortunately I did not have to funds to buy a $3,500 bag when I was in high school. I don’t even have those funds now. Does anybody even have those funds? Either way, I had to resort to buying inexpensive bags from places like H&M, which was totally fine, but it’s hard to find something super cute for super cheap sometimes.
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying some cheap accessories, it can be a little awkward when they actually look cheap. I’m all for buying a $5 bag from somewhere affordable like Forever 21, but sometimes, they just look boring. Luckily, you don’t have to be stuck with a boring bag just because you want to save some money. There are toooooons of ways to make your cheap bags look designer-approved, and they’ll be so unique you’ll make all the other girls jealous. So next time you want a new bag, save your money and go for something affordable that you can DIY for a fraction of the cost! Here are some ideas to get you started:
Add Enamel PinsPins are an easy way to make your bags/jackets/scarves look cute AF. They are super cheap and the best part is that you can switch them up all the time, so you can have a unique look every day. Source
Add PatchesAdding patches to basically anything can make it look super edgy and cool and give you an updated look without having to go out and buy one of those bags with patches for hundreds of dollars. You can add them to bags, jackets, even pants if you wanna get super creative. It will honestly make anything you wear look more expensive and "high fashion" because of how "in" patches are in right now. Source
Add LaceI really think adding lace to any thing makes it look classy in less than a minute. You can add it to an already cute purse (check out a tutorial here) or even just wrap it around the straps. All you need is some lace and fabric glue, and you've got a cute bag for any occasion.
Color Block ItIt's 2016, which means you can essentially color block anything your heart desires. Purses, bags, earrings, anything you have can be color blocked. It will make your accessories look like pieces of art, nobody will ever suspect you bought it for $5. Try this easy tutorial that will show you how to get a color blocked bag for practically nothing.
Add ChainsWhile I'm not personally a fan of chains, there is a very "Chanel" aspect of putting a chain on your handle that will make it look super fancy and expensive. You can easily DIY this look by taking an old chain from a bracelet or necklace and wrapping it around your bag straps. Easy and cute. Source
Wrap A Scarf Around The StrapsAnother super cute way to update your bag is to wrap a scarf around it. It's super easy and really switches up the look of your bag from "eh" to "chic AF." Plus, it will make your bag wearable in any season: you can add a floral scarf for spring, or a cute silvery one for winter. It's super versatile! Source
Add A BandannaBandanna's are also really in right now since they are so versatile and can literally be worn with anything from a cute dress to a cowboy hat. You can tie it onto the handle of your bag or even sew it on the sides for a super unique trim. Source
