When looking for Halloween costume inspiration, most people turn to the usual suspects: movies, TV shows, pop culture moments, books, and animals. There’s nothing wrong with these things, obviously, but sometimes it can be fun to take inspiration from something more unexpected. One great example of this is the weather. Yes, it sounds weird to say, “I’m going to be a rain cloud this Halloween!” but the end result, if done correctly, is pretty awesome. Plus, you can almost guarantee that no one else will think of the same thing.
DIY weather costumes are a lot cooler than they sound, I promise. They might take some time to put together, but sometimes it can be fun to put a lot of work into your costume, even if you’re only going to wear it for one night. And if you’re a nature buff, these are great for you! Check out these DIY weather costume ideas that will make you the best dressed person at any Halloween party.
RainThis rainy day costume is so adorable. Wear a black dress, make a cloud headpiece out of cotton, then make little strings of rain. Perfect! Source
AutumnDress up as everyone's favorite weather, fall weather. This is actually really beautiful to look at. Use fake leaves from a craft store to make a leaf crown, then use face paint and makeup to create this very pretty look. You'll need some makeup skills, but the end result is awesome. Source
Moon and Sun BFF CostumeOne of my favorite best friend costume ideas is the sun and moon, which is also a perfect costume if you and your bestie are total opposites. One of you can be the moon, wearing silver metallics, while the other one can be the sun, wearing gold. Add some headpieces and makeup and you're good to go. Source: Instagram/brittneysingleton
Sun and Moon Couples CostumeYou can also do the sun and the moon as a couples costume. I love that these focus entirely on makeup! Source: Instagram/bangooza
All The WeatherIf you can't decide which type of weather you want to be, just be all of them! These costumes represent a sunny day, a cloudy day, a storm, and the rainbow that comes after it. They're so cute, and probably easier to make than you think, especially if you just print out images online. Source: Instagram/sokha723
SnowSnow makes for a very magical costume. Wear a white leotard (or just all white) and lots of shimmery white makeup. Add little white crowns or tiaras that you can make or purchase, and make sure to wear the most glittery eyelashes you can find. Source: Instagram/taelorrussell
A ThunderstormHow cute is this stormy costume? Wear a black or gray dress, then create a little neck cloud with white cotton puffs. Create big blue raindrops and glue them to the bottom of the cloud, then make a cloud and lightening bold headband to top it all off. Source
A Lightening BoltSkip the thunder and clouds part, and just be a lightening bolt - or a lightening strike. This is so clever! Make a lightening headpiece, then grab clothes you don't care about and them rip them up so they look torn. Make your hair and makeup wild and crazy, and walk around with a dazed look on your face all night. Source
A TornadoThis is the cutest costume idea, and one I can bet most other people will not think of. You can do the tornado on your own, or you can make it a best friend costume by having your bestie dress as Dorothy. Source
NighttimeA clear night sky makes for a gorgeous makeup look for Halloween. If you're skilled with makeup, this is for you - do this on your face, wear black lipstick, and then just wear a black dress. It's so pretty and doesn't even require a lot of money on a costume you'll never wear again. Source: Instagram/alsilv3
Lightening Strike Couples CostumeThis couples costume is pretty awesome. One of you can be the lightening bolt, the other one can be the one struck by lightening. Genius! Source
Storm and Storm ChaserHow clever is this idea? One of you can dress up as a storm, and the other one can be the storm chaser (you know, those crazy people who get in vans or helicopters and go into the eye of big storms to take pictures). I have no idea how this girl did this amazing cloud costume, but I'm sure you can find a tutorial online. Source: Instagram/kellymcconnaughey
A Sunny DayI'm obsessed with this sun costume that represents my favorite kind of day: no clouds, all sun, warm weather. Perfection! This does require some crafting for the hat, but otherwise you can just wear all yellow. Gold metallic flash tattoos work on your face instead of makeup if you want. Source: Instagram/crownbeautybar
Lightening MakeupInstead of crafting a lightening bolt to wear or accessorize with, use some makeup skills to just decorate your face. This is so incredibly impressive. Source: Instagram/manaynay13
WindWho can't relate, tbh? This is a really easy last minute idea. Grab clothes you don't care about, rip them up, make them all lopsided, mess up your hair, and turn an umbrella inside out. You can even glue a scarf to the umbrella handle to look really wind-blown. Source
HurricaneOkay, honestly, this is awesome. I have no idea how this person did this, but it is so, so cool. Just don't name yourself a hurricane that destroyed everything in its path, okay? Source
A RainbowIs a rainbow considered weather? I don't think so, but it's fine. I love how this girl used a cloudy sheet as a cape for this look. You could just wear rainbow clothes and do rainbow makeup, but I think this is a lot more creative. Source: Instagram/katiearbore
A Thunder CloudThis costume is actually relatively simple, as long as you can find a pair of lightening bolt leggings or tights. Then you can just grab a whole bunch of cotton and create this puffy, cloud-like dress and headpiece. Source
