There is no shortage of human beings to dress up as for Halloween, whether you’re going for a fictional character, a celebrity, or some other pop culture reference. So, since it makes the most sense for someone to dress up as, you know, a fellow person… why would we go out of our way to dress up as animals? And not just a real animal, but a fake, cartoon animal. To that, I say, why wouldn’t we? Animals are adorable, cartoon animals are somehow cuter, and we can be whoever we want to be on Halloween. Who says it has to be a person?
Although Halloween is supposed to be about scaring people and acting super creepy, it doesn’t have to be that way. Dressing up as a fictional animal can be a fun and adorable breath of fresh air. Plus, it’s just fun! A lot of costume stores sell cartoon animal costumes, but the outfits tend to be plastic-looking and just kind of lame. DIY your own animal costume – it forces you to be creative and makes the holiday a lot more fun. It also makes your look more unique. If you need some ideas on how to get started, you’ve come to the right place. I did some research on the cutest DIY cartoon animal costumes, and by the end of this post, I think you’ll have trouble picking just one. Check ’em out!
Sandy Cheeks from Spongebob SquarepantsIt's easy to forget Sandy is a squirrel, because, uh, she lives underwater... but she is. This is such a cute costume, and while it's not super easy to recreate, it's worth it. If you're good at crafting and want to try this, go for it! It's really impressive and very unique. Source
The White Rabbit from Alice In WonderlandIs this not one of the prettiest costumes you've ever seen? It's fun and different, but also so well put together that it could almost be an actual outfit (well, maybe if you were a style blogger). Wear this on Halloween and you'll want to wear it every day after that too. Source
Minnie MouseYou won't have to tell anyone "I'm a mouse, duh" a la Karen from Mean Girls if you're sporting the classic red polka dots of this Disney original. If you have a partner, make it a duo by having them dress as Mickey Mouse. Source
Hello KittyThis cute cat couldn't be any easier to pull off. Find a red dress, white stockings or socks, and a big bow, and you're already halfway there. Use eyeliner to draw some whisker on your cheeks to complete the look. Source
Donald DuckQuack. Donald Duck may not have the nicest temper, but he makes for a nice costume. Unlike the famous character, I do recommend wearing pants. Halloween gets cold! If you want, you can copy this girl's look and pair a tutu skirt with yellow tights. It looks awesome and gets the job done. Source
Nemo from Finding NemoYou won't be hard to find if you're wearing a bright orange dress. You can glue an orange tutu onto a cheap dress, or you can wear an orange tutu with an orange top. Add some makeup and practice your best fishy face. Get the whole crew together for a blue Dory, green Squirt, and blue vegetarian shark. If anyone has a headlamp, they can be the scary angler fish! Puss in Boots from ShrekOn guard! This feisty feline can go from tough to cuddly faster than you can draw your sword. Pull on your favorite tall black boots, and find a yellow feather at a local craft store to top off this costume. This is so adorable and really creative. When was the last time you saw someone dressed as Puss In Boots?! That's what I thought. Source
Tweety BirdWork on your chirp and your lisp before putting on your feathered mask. This costume can easily be created with a yellow unitard and some tutu crafting. Make yourself a feather hat, add orange tights, and put on orange legwarmers to stay warm. This creative idea will definitely be a winner. Source
Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesSquad up like these tough guys for a costume that's both a throwback and an ode to current pop culture. Plus, any excuse to order pizza is a good one. Source
Miss PiggyWhat a diva! Wear something fancy, and if you can convince someone to dress in green and act like Kermit the frog, even better. I love this idea, personally - a white dress with pink fur and heels and a little piggy nose. It's easy and cheap! Source
