Fetishes are a strange concept. Sometimes you can get thrown off by a partner’s admittance of a fetish, like the always-popular scene where someone finds out the “perfect” person actually gets turned on by sucking toes. Sometimes, you even get weirded out by your own fetish and you do anything to try to hide it. The truth is, they are pretty common. While it used to be a taboo subject, the popularity of the Fifty Shades of Grey series opened the door for women to talk about unconventional sex. One 2016 sex study even noted that men and woman displayed the same levels of interest in fetishism. The results showed that half of the survey responders where turned on by “atypical” situations, meaning that they might not be atypical after all. So, all of those so-called “weird” fetishes you’ve heard of? They’re more normal than you thought.
The key to exploring fetishes is communication and consent. You should never feel uncomfortable or that the other person is forcing you to do things without discussing them with you first. It’s also important that you don’t shame one another for expressing your desires. Laughing at someone when they admit they’re turned on by something different is mean and disrespectful. How would you feel if you opened up to someone, and they shot you down and made you feel dumb about it? Pretty crappy! We’re increasingly becoming a more sex positive culture, and this is one aspect of it! Explore your fantasies and desires without fear that you’re strange.
Here are some fetishes that might sound weird but are actually common:
BDSMBDSM involves role-play and stands for B/D (Bondage and Discipline), D/s (Dominance and submission), and S/M (Sadism and Masochism). It's actually a lot different than what Christian Grey does. As redditor toxinogen says, "BDSM is about trust and letting go, whereas Fifty Shades of Grey is about abuse and taking advantage of a (stupid) girl's vulnerability." Source: iStock
ChokingChoking is a common fetish- I'm constantly hearing from my guy friends that girls are asking them to be choked while making out! It can be dangerous, though. You should never actually have your breath cut off as it could lead to injury when not done right. Here's a helpful guide by Queer Kink. Source: iStock
Exhibitionism and VoyeurismThis fetish involves watching people have sex or having sex in front of others with consent. It includes going to a nude beach, watching someone masturbate (or doing it in front of someone else), or even wearing a revealing dress. Source: iStock
Foot FetishThis fetish can involve the naked foot, stockings, or in shoes. Even if you don't share this fetish, you might find you enjoy the extra attention to your feet. Who doesn't like getting their feet rubbed?! Source: iStock
Role-PlayRole-play is a fun way to lose any sexual inhibitions or explore your sexuality. They can range from simple scenes to elaborate set-ups with scripts. Some of your common role-play scenarios are doctor/patient, handyman/housewife, and teacher/student. Source: iStock
Role ReversalA lot of people enjoy having sex with the woman being in charge. You can call the shots, be more physical and aggressive, all while still being loving and conscientious. Role reversal can go as far as pegging (when a woman uses a strap on). Source: iStock
SpankingThought spanking might feel shocking or strange, a lot of people enjoy it as a part of foreplay. It could relate to childhood or just be a celebration of the booty! Source: iStock
