Halloween is the one day of the year when you can wear whatever you want and pretend to be whoever you want, even if it’s the furthest personality from who you actually are. Okay, that’s not exactly true – you can wear whatever and be whoever you want any day of the year, but Halloween is the one day you don’t have to worry about other people judging you for it (not that judgement should matter anyway, but, like, sometimes it does even when we don’t want it to, so I get it, and… I’m moving away from the point). So, if you follow that line of thinking, then who says that just because you identify as female, you have to dress as a female character? On October 31st, you’ll see people dressed as fictional cartoon animals, terrifying scary movie characters, food, board games, Internet memes, puns, and even tampons. If your favorite character happens to be a dude, why not try a gender bending costume?
It sounds obvious – if you want to dress as a male character, go for it! – but it isn’t to everyone. I’ve heard girls say things like, “I wish I could dress as Bane this year!” and then follow it up with, “But I’m not a guy. Ugh!” Ugh is right. Who cares if you don’t have a penis? You can still dress as a dude! Maybe, like, five people will care about your gender swap, and those people sound really ignorant and lame and boring if you ask me. While there are tons of amazing female characters and personalities you can choose from for your Halloween costume, there are also lots of great male ones too – and sometimes you just want to do something a little different. So, whether you’re a girl who wants to try a gender swap for a day, someone with female parts who identifies as male and wants to find the perfect costume, or anyone in between or outside of that, here is some fun Halloween inspiration. Check out these DIY gender bending costumes, and stop letting your body parts dictate what you “have” to do!
The JokerThe Joker is one of my favorite gender swapping costumes out there. I've seen a lot of girls do it, and I just think they pull it off better than dudes! This is also a relatively simple costume, as long as you can find a purple blazer and green vest. The makeup is easy even for beginners, because it's supposed to be messy. And it's fun! Source
Han SoloPrincess Leia is obviously a total badass, but she's also a slightly overdone costume. If you want to show off your Star Wars love and do something a little different, be Han Solo. It's more comfortable, it's easy to put together, and it's just plain cool. Source
A F*ckboyI'm *literally* lol-ing. There have never been more f**kboys than there have been in 2016, I think, and this costume also couldn't be easier. I mean, I don't really understand why they are just gray t-shirts and knee socks (?) but I like the funny statuses and texts on them. You can even choose classic f**kboy clothes, like a striped tank top and colorful board shorts, or a polo shirt with nice jeans or something. Source
ChuckyIf you want to dress as something on the scarier side, go for Chucky. Few things are creepier than that scary AF little doll. This is the perfect costume for natural redheads, and if you can pull off this sick makeup, it's even better. Make it a BFF costume by finding a friend to dress as the Bride of Chucky, or make it a couples costume! Source
JigsawJigsaw from Saw is another great option, because that dude and the movies are terrifying AF. Full disclosure, I watched Saw in high school, got so scared I didn't sleep by myself for actual months, and never watched another scary movie for at least 10 years. IT IS NO JOKE. This costume is cool though. Source
Luke Danes from Gilmore GirlsI cannot quite explain how much I love this. If you're a brunette with Resting Bitch Face, you were made to be Luke Danes for Halloween, I don't know what else to say. You can find "Luke's" t-shirts on Etsy (or make your own with a print-out or a patch or something). Add his classic backwards baseball cap and plaid shirt, grab a pen and a pad, and prepare to look angry and miserable all night. Source
BeetlejuiceBeetlejuice is a classic Halloween costume, but why let the guys have all the fun with it? Girls make badass Beetlejuice characters too. You just need to get your hands on a striped suit, which, admittedly, might cost some money, because I doubt many of you have these pieces hanging in your closet. But from there you get to have a LOT of fun with hair and makeup. Source
Peter Pan and His ShadowI love Peter Pan as much as the next Disney fan, but let's be real: Wendy is, like, pretty boring (no offense, I mean she's fine, she just doesn't really stand out when it comes to female Disney characters), and Tinkerbell is a cliche costume at this point. So, why not dress up as Peter Pan? Make it a BFF costume by enlisting someone to be your shadow all night, because that is just fun. Source
Dr. WhoDr. Who fans, I am here for you. Someone do this costume. It is so easy, and so cute, and it looks so comfortable and warm (very important). I love it, and I've never even watched the show (don't hurt me). Source
Ed SheeranEd Sheeran as a choice is super random to me, but go for it if you're into him! He seems cool and chill, aside from the fact that Taylor Swift is basically obsessed with him and likes to tote him around like a little accessory. ANYWAY. If you're a fan, this is so cute - and easy. Source: Instagram
Drogo from Game of ThronesYes, Daenerys is one of the best characters on Game Of Thrones, and of course you can go as her as you want, it's just that... it's become so popular and overdone. If you want to fun with makeup, be Drogo. He's awesome and we all miss him, and this makeup tutorial is magic. Source
Axl RoseThis is another random celeb choice, but hey, if you're into it, go for it. This chick looks awesome! Source: Instagram
Edward ScissorhandsDoes this girl make a better Edward Scissorhands than Johnny Depp? I feel like the answer is yes. This costume is kind of complicated, and definitely very popular, but still worth doing. It's fun, and it's so perfect for Halloween. Source
Gaston from Beauty and The BeastOkay, no lie, Gaston is a douche, but maybe you like that in a costume. If so, be him for Halloween. It's not that difficult, if you can find a red dress and yellow gloves, and then you can pretend to be an arrogant jerk all night. I don't know why that's fun? It's not, really, but this costume still looks good. Source
Jack SparrowWhy be a boring pirate when you can be Jack Sparrow? That has always been my motto, personally. I love this look. It's comfortable, it's fun, and it's recognizable. Source
Russ from UpI have never seen Up, so I hope that this little dude's name is actually Russ, but there you go (it's Friday, let me live). This is adorable and looks very on point. And wouldn't it be fun to carry balloons around all night? I kind of think it would be. Source
Walter WhiteI know that everyone and their mother and their father and their fifth cousins has dressed up as Walter White and Jesse at some point, but it doesn't change the fact that Breaking Bad is everything. And so are these costumes. Source: Instagram
Waynes World GuysYes, this might be one of the most popular costume ideas on Pinterest, but you can't deny that it's also so fun and easy and cute and a great throwback. And it's an excellent BFF costume! Source
