It is hard for even me to believe right now that, in the year of our lord 2016, I am writing an entire, full-fledged post about the (former?) boy band known as One Direction. They are on a “break,” you see, which most people have taken to assuming really means a break up, considering Zayn already left, and Harry is becoming a movie star, and Louis is a dad now, and Liam has a separate record deal, and Niall is, uh, busy golfing. Yet here we are.
It is important to note that I do love One Direction–and its fandom–deeply. While I have never (officially) written any fan fiction or created any One Direction memes myself, I recently received a comedy Niall Horan “chónce” tribute sweatshirt for my 23rd birthday, which meant more to me than most material possessions might. I also did a presentation on One Direction for a sociology class that I took my senior year of college, which I believe had an argument along the lines of boy bands like One Direction establishing a form of collective behavior that is both beneficial and detrimental for young girls and feminism or something. It’s not important. Photographic evidence is below:
I got an A on the project, if you are wondering, which I say not to boast about my illustrious career in boy band-based academia, but rather to demonstrate that rabid and age-inappropriate stanning does pay off. Anyway, I miss One Direction, so today, I am writing about them. Or, to be more exact, I am writing about a very specific time in the One Direction fandom’s history–like, 2012-2013–that birthed a collection of memes, fan fictions, and “imagines” (a type of micro-fanfic that inserts the reader directly into the narrative), which really are, uh, something. Anyway, these memes and imagines (most of which come from my favorite Tumblr blog of all time, “Bad One Direction Imagines“) truly are iconic in every single way, and I love them all with my entire heart. Check ’em out here:
