Let’s be honest: when you were younger, Halloween was literally the greatest night of the year. You got to dress up however you want, stay up late and get FREE CANDY. It’s a dream come true, right? It’s the perfect combination of spooky and fun. Plus, you got to see adults dressed up in weird costumes that they thought were hilarious, even though they actually were super lame. My favorite part of Halloween was watching all of the Halloween-themed movies and TV shows that would air in October. But, as I got older, I began to realize that most of them are actually super unrealistic.
Halloween movies and TV shows are filled with unrealistic things that you think will happen to you on October 31st, but they actually won’t. I know, I know, it’s all just supposed to be entertaining, but I can’t help it if I get a little bit salty about fictional characters portraying Halloween as something that is isn’t. Don’t get me wrong: Halloween is still the best holiday. But, there are a lot of misconceptions that come with it. Take a look at these movies and TV episodes that don’t accurately portray Halloween. But don’t worry: You’ll still have a great Halloween, even if you don’t get any full-sized candy bars.
You'll Carve The BEST PumpkinI know you want to get really creative with your pumpkin carving this year, but unless you are willing to dedicate some serious time and effort, your pumpkin will probably be looking pretty basic. Not that it's a bad thing, but achieving that complicated design that Chanel #6 carved in Scream Queens might be a little bit of a reach. Let's face it: as fancy as you want to be, you will end up doing the same "scary" jack-o-lantern face that you do every year. No shame.
You'll Go To A Haunted House That's Actually ScaryI don't know about you, but any time I've ever been to a Halloween-themed haunted house, it has never been quite as scary as you expect it to be. Sure, the one Nick goes to in New Girl wasn't terribly scary, but it end with him getting beaten up by a bunch of people dressed up as ghosts. Luckily, that probably won't happen to you.
You'll Be Able To Pull Off Elaborate CostumesI understand that the girls of Pretty Little Liars are on a TV show, but honestly, what high school student can actually afford a dress like this, and wear it on Halloween, a night where you will probably get melted chocolate all over yourself by the time the night is over, or get all sweaty at some Halloween party.
You'll Go To An Actual Halloween PartyHalloween parties can be fun sometimes, like in Mean Girls, but that is on the rare occasion that Halloween lands on a weekend. This year, it's on a Monday, which means you probably have school the next day. I don't know about you, but my friends would never have a Halloween party on a school night. Even if they did, I doubt my mom would let me go. Even if you go to a party or not, you will probably be exhausted the next day, just in time for that pop quiz your teacher decides to give you. Ugh.
You'll Summon Witches...And Get Your Crush To Notice YouHonestly, you are probably more likely to summon a witch than get your crush to notice you this Halloween. I'm totally kidding, but the chances of you and your crush bonding over some supernatural experience is very slim. Or course, since Halloween movies are meant to entertain, you are left with the false expectation that you will fall in love on the spookiest night of the year, like the two main characters in Hocus Pocus. Spoiler alert: it's probably not going to happen.
You'll Get Full-Sized Candy BarsAs a kid, I thought that full-sized candy bars were a myth. As an adult, I realize that I was RIGHT, as the kids of Bob's Burgers pointed out in their Halloween episode, although they were ultimately able to get their candy bars after sneaking out. Don't sneak out this Halloween, guys. Big candy bars are not worth it. If you are one of the few lucky kids who gets a full-sized candy bar on Halloween, then more power to you, because it rarely happens.
You And your BFF Will have Amazing CostumesSure, you have time to think about your Halloween costume, but it's also a really busy time of year, which means you might forget about it until the absolute last minute. Then you are left with one day to think of a totally unique costume for you and your friends, and your last-minute costume probably won't be that good. It's time to start planning! You could also try this adorable peanut butter and jelly costume, like the kids from Gravity Falls.
You'll Befriend A GhostMaybe, if you're into the ~pale and mysterious~ type, you'll catch the eye of some ghost this Halloween. But that doesn't mean you should start crushing on an actual ghost, like Kat from Casper. Maybe you and your friends will go to an actual haunted house and meet some ghosts, which is pretty cool, but I would advise against having a crush on those ghosts. It wouldn't end well.
Your Makeup Will Stay On All NightNo matter how hard you try, there is a very low possibility that your awesome and unique Halloween makeup will actually last all day, as Tate's does in American Horror Story. In reality, Halloween is a long day that includes having to actually go to school, then trick-or-treating. If your makeup manages to stay on the whole day, you are an actual wizard.
