I’m at a point in my life in which I can safely say that if low-rise pants make a comeback, someone will have to take my high waist pants from my cold, dead hands.
Listen, I know that fashion works in cycles. What has suddenly gone out of style will have a revamp in a decade or two. There’s a beauty to this; those of us who were too young to wear chunky platform heels as kids in the ’90s are able to embrace their mighty return now that we’re older. The return of the bold ’80s brow has replaced the overly plucked look of the ’00s, allowing those of us with naturally big eyebrows to truly prosper. And, more recently, the high waist pants of yesteryear–the cut that reminded many of us of our moms or grandmas–came back in vogue in a big way. After falling in love with a style that I find so flattering and comfortable, I can’t believe that I spent my pre-teen and teen years finding little issue with my low-rise (and ultra low rise) jeans.
Oh, how wrong I was. I was so, so wrong.
But now, I’m scared. Early ’00s fashion is slowly coming back, bringing chokers, gradient sunglasses, and t-shirts on top of long sleeves along with it. That, I can live with. What I can’t live with, however, is the inevitable return of low-rise pants. I’m sure many will be wearing them ironically at first, but what happens when stores are full of them, like they were in the ’00s, and finding an alternative becomes impossible? Should I start stocking up on my high waist treasures now? I straight up gasped in horror when I saw an American Apparel ad highlighting their new low-rise jean, and I kind of wanted to die.
I’ve eaten my words after badmouthing a lot of trends that I end up rocking, but not this. This just cannot stand. If you need some convincing, check out these seven reasons why low-rise pants should never have a comeback.
Body Scrutiny Will Be Even WorseI remember that it was so popular to get a belly button piercing back when low rise was in...only if you had a flat tummy though. We're just getting on the body positivity train, this will derail it for some folks. People should be able to feel confident no matter what, obviously, but high waist pants allowed a resistance from the idea that you shouldn't leave the house without having a model's tummy.
Butt CracksIf you wore low rise jeans and managed not to have your butt crack on display for all to see...then you probably just didn't know about it. Like, it's not the end of the world, but high waist pants prevent this 100 percent.
Constantly Pulling Up Your PantsI don't miss that, at all, and it was always happening whenever I wore low rise jeans. God, high school never looked darker. Who wants to deal with that all over again? Not me. Not you, either, I'm sure.
It'll Signal The Return Of The Visible ThongNo. No. No. No. No. It's only a matter of time, though, and I'm not ready. I'm just not ready.
Love Handles Can Cause Self-ConsciousnessFor those of us who don't want our rolls on display (LOL, like me!), low rise pants make this impossible. I'm not saying that low handles are the end of the world, but when I wear high rise pants I don't even have to give them a second thought. Plus, I probably wouldn't wear as many crop tops as I do now if low rise pants were in! High rise pants give me enough skin cover to show a hint of tummy without feeling like I'm half naked. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way...
They Look Best With A Retro LookSee, here's what I'll say: low rise pants looked so good back in the '60s and '70s. They just...don't really translate to today's style. It needs the whole package.
High Waist Looks Good On EveryoneI'm not saying that low rise looks bad on certain people, but I do think that high waist looks so good on everyone. It's also versatile! It can be rocked in a casual way or a classy way, for work and play, you know? You can make them edgy or make them a little more demure, depending on how you rock 'em. Low rise always kind of look ultra laid back and casual, and that's not really a look we're trying to go for whenever we wear pants.
