13 Of The Most Insane Gifts Real Couples Have Given Each Other

If you’ve ever spent an extended period of time on a relationship goals-themed Twitter, Instagram, or Tumblr account, you’ve probably left with some, uh, skewed expectations of what a relationship is supposed to be like. You know, like, thinking that all couples have to wear matching sweatpants and Calvin Klein underwear to ensure that the relationship is healthy. Keeping large stuffed bears around at all times as an extra form of protection, of course. You probably think that, in order to keep a relationship strong, one must be spending at least $200,000 per annum on lavish, photogenic gifts as a means of keeping bae happy. This not to say that I am opposed to the concept of gifts entirely, of course. There is obviously nothing wrong with spending a little extra money or time working on something nice for a person you happen to care about on a special occasion – doing so is a physical reminder that you do care about them, and while you shouldn’t have to rely on gifts to keep a relationship strong, it certainly can’t hurt. (They aren’t called “tokens of affection” for nothing, after all!)

It’s just that when these gifts are of the “relationship goals” variety—i.e. costly, overly elaborate, and bearing a certain quality that, while you can’t put a finger on what it is exactly, makes you feel as though the gift was given solely so that it could be posted on social media – I am tempted to call foul. And, lately, I have seen a whole lot of these! Check out the most insane gifts that real couples have actually given each other:

1. An alligator?

2. This pair of shoes that carry a strong message:

3. Literally just straight-up cash, for no apparent reason:

4. Mountains of…stuff:

5. A Michael Kors bag???

6. This BONKERS–but cute–contraption:

7. This one, too:
