A few months ago, I heard a news story that left me feeling low-key terrified. Many of you probably read or heard about it also: giant brand Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer that was linked to her daily use of Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products. The story completely freaked me out, because honestly, who knew? I work in the beauty media industry, so of course I had heard about the controversy surrounding talc powder before, but for some reason, I had always been naive enough to believe that huge beauty brands (like Johnson & Johnson) were doing *something* (I don’t know what, exactly) to keep their beauty products safe. I was wrong, and that was the moment I started paying more attention to all natural beauty and skincare brands.
Honestly, you should do the same, whether you’re a beauty addict much like myself, or just someone who uses the most basic skincare products. The facts are real, and they’re scary – Johnson & Johnson definitely isn’t the only major beauty brand out there using products that could make us sick. Almost all of the personal care products out there contain harmful chemicals, and while you might expect to see or hear about some kind of warning, you won’t. The scariest fact of them all, according to Time: companies in the United States are “allowed to put ingredients into personal care products with no required safety testing, and without disclosing all the ingredients.” This means that the products you’re putting on your skin that are getting absorbed into your body, are barely regulated. Why is this happening? How is this even possible?
I don’t want to bore you or completely freak you out with all of the stories about harmful chemicals that can be found in many of your favorite products, but let’s just say it paints a bleak picture. Even worse, it’s not like this everywhere else. This whole Johnson & Johnson situation could have been avoided – they see formaldehyde free versions of their products in Europe and other countries because they have to, and they don’t have to in the US. WTF?
The beauty industry in the US is giant, and so many of us are unknowingly using harmful chemicals every single day. That’s terrifying and shocking and horrible. This is why I’ve started paying more attention to all natural, organic beauty brands that are honest about what they use and care about their customers. Of course, there are scams out there – companies that capitalize on the fear and create products that aren’t actually all-natural. But there are also trustworthy brands with products that aren’t the hippie items you might expect. I don’t want to be dramatic and say these could save your life… but let’s face it, they might be able to. I’ve been testing out so many different brands and items in the last few months, and I’m really excited to give you guys a list of all-natural beauty brands for skincare that is safe and wonderful. You deserve that! Check ’em out, and remember this the next time you’re shopping for beauty products!
The Jojoba Company originates from Australia, which already makes it cool. In all seriousness though, this brand offers a lot of amazing products that really work and are also aesthetically pleasing. Their products are all natural, organic, and they actually work. You can choose between different types of skincare, but my personal favorite is the Jojoba Bead cleanser. Most cleansers with exfoliating beads use little pieces of plastic that are bad for the environment, but The Jojoba Company uses naturally solidified jojoba beads that are all natural and eco-friendly.
Standout Product: Jojoba Bead Facial Cleanser, $34.95, The Jojoba Company
You may have seen these colorful little beauty products in Urban Outfitters (which is where I first spotted them). Little Moon Essentials makes amazing all-natural products in the most fun packaging with the most clever names. They make their products with all natural ingredients and essential oils, and most are even vegan. There’s so much to choose from that it can be a bit overwhelming (they don’t stop at beauty products – there are also healing products on the site), but I love their lotions, especially Gimmie A Break. They’re made without icky chemicals and they leave skin feeling super soft. The brand is a little old-school too, which is really nice to see.
Standout Product: Gimme A Break Lotion, $7.50 – $27, Little Moon Essentials
The Better Skin Company actually only makes this Mirakle Cream, but I wish they made more! The backstory of the brand is adorable and a classic “American dream” tale – the creator brought her famous family recipe for this cream to America, and eventually began selling it. The cream is made with natural ingredients and is gluten-free, paraben-free, and fragrance-free. Plus, they don’t test on animals. Oh, and did I mention how incredible it feels on your skin? You definitely need to replace your drugstore lotion with this brand.
Standout Product: Better Skin Mirakle Cream, $34, The Better Skin Co.
Herbivore Botanicals offers some of my favorite all-natural products ever. Not only do their items really work, but they’re so aesthetically pleasing. I first spotted these in Urban Outfitters and have been obsessed ever since. The products are made with non-toxic ingredients that each serve a specific healing purpose. One of my favorites is the Instant Glow mask, which feels tingly and refreshing, and leaves your skin super soft and glowy.
Standout Product: Brighten Pineapple Enzyme + Gemstone Instant Glow Mask, $48, Sephora
5. S.W. Basics
Like the other brands on this list, S.W. Basics uses all-natural ingredients… but what makes them stand out is how many they use. With five or less ingredients in each product, the company proves that keeping it simple is your best bet. These products originate from Brooklyn, but are gaining lots of popularity – I spotted them in the Target on Long island the other day. I love the Exfoliant, which is earthy and fun, because you mix it with water to use it.
Standout Product: Exfoliant, $24, S.W. Basics
Model Audrey Kitching started the brand Crystal Cactus to promote crystal and energy healing. Her website features lots of fun accessories and items, including hand-crafted beauty products like this bath soak. There are a bunch to choose from, but my favorite is this Floral Alchemy option. It’s so gorgeous to look at that you won’t even want to use it. Plus, the ingredients are simple and natural.
Standout Product: Floral Alchemy Intention Bath, $23, Crystal Cactus
Lyeska was created to avoid GMOs and other icky chemical ingredients. They make their products to be natural, safe, and effective, with each ingredient serving a specific purpose. As their website notes, “we believe that a skincare product should do more than just preserve or enhance beauty; it should make you feel confident that you are making an informed, responsible and healthy choice for both yourself and for the world around you.” You’ll definitely feel good when using their dreamy Siberian cedar nut oil, which is 100 percent natural, vegan, and not greasy or too oily.
Standout Product: Pure Siberian Cedar Nut Oil, $30, Lyeska
One Love Organics makes products that look nice, actually work, and are safe for your body. They use natural, high quality ingredients, avoiding GMOs, parabens, phenoxyethanol, nanoparticles, silicon, PEG, and synthetic perfumes and dyes. If many of those words sounded like gibberish to you, doesn’t that mean they shouldn’t be in your products? Exactly! One Love Organics offers lots of great options, but my favorite is the Vitamin B cleansing oil, which is a best seller for them. It gently cleanses skin while removing all traces of makeup – and it’s natural.
Standout Product: Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil, $42, One Love Organics
I actually came across Dermae on Instagram and knew I had to try it out, because I love a good charcoal mask. This one is amazing – it really, really cleans your skin, leaving you feeling refreshed and glowy. The best thing about it is that it starts off very dark and then fades as it tightens, which is just aesthetically pleasing and fun. And, also, it works, like I said.
Standout Product: Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask, $19.50, Dermae
With its unique packaging, Youth To The People is a brand that catches your eye right away – as it should. Their products are made with 100 percent vegan ingredients, with no added fragrances or colors. Everything is all-natural, not tested on animals, and even made in recyclable packaging. I’ve been using the Kale + Spinach Green Tea moisturizer religiously this summer. It’s cooling, refreshing, and super hydrating.
Standout Product: Kale + Spinach Cream, $48, Birchbox
11. Avalon Organics
Avalon Organics uses plant-based organic ingredients from trusted sources, and are vegan and cruelty free. It’s amazing that they’re so good for our skin and the earth, and they go for such affordable prices. There is a lot to choose from in the brand – I also love their facial cleansers and body washes – but their towelettes are especially great. They’re soft and they feel cleansing without leaving an icky feeling behind.
Standout Product: Brilliant Balance Purifying Towelettes, $5.03, iHerb
This Brazlian brand is also committed to producing products that are vegan and cruelty free, without parabens, synthetic fragrances, silicone, gluten, phtalates, sulfates, or other harsh chemicals. What makes them stand out from other natural beauty brands is that they use lots of naturally active superfruits from the rainforests of Brazil. I can’t get enough of the Rainforest At Dawn cleanser, which relaxes me just looking at it.
Standout Product: Brazlian Beauty Rainforest At Dawn Cleanser, $20, Teadora Beauty
13. Soul Sunday
I’m a sucker for simple, aesthetically pleasing packaging with cute names, which is why I was first drawn to Soul Sunday. I stayed for their all-natural approach to products. Their Rice Water Cleanser is truly amazing, but my favorite is the Unicorn Oil. Made with natural essential oils, this little rollerball is a total dream. Put it on your temples to get rid of headaches or stress. The refreshing peppermint scent immediately calms you down.
Standout Product: Unicorn Oil Aromatherapy Roller, $18, Soul Sunday
14. Indie Lee
Creator Indie Lee made this brand after surviving a scary life-threatening brain tumor, knowing she had to use more natural, eco-friendly ingredients. The brand prides itself on using natural, healthy ingredients and pairing them with glamorous, luxury packaging and design. I love so many of the products, but my favorite is this toner, which leaves your skin feeling awesome. If you like the look of luxury beauty products but want to do something more eco-friendly, Indie Lee is your brand.
Standout Product: Co Q10 Toner, $32, Credo Beauty
So many fragrances and perfumes are made with harsh, harmful chemicals, but Forager Botanticals makes sure to use natural ingredients that are good for your body and the Earth. The fragrances are natural and earthy, but my favorite item is the Beach Body Wash. It smells like a summer evening and the glass bottle looks so pretty in your shower.
Standout Product: Beach Body Wash, $26, Forager Botanicals
16. Tru Organics
Like the name suggests, Tru Organics uses all-natural, organic, and cruelty-free ingredients to create amazing beauty products. They also promote an inspiring Love Yourself lifestyle. This detoxifying mask is all-natural and feels so awesome. It gets rid of acne and minimizes pores, and it just feels good to use something you know isn’t harming your body.
Standout Product: Detoxifying Mask, $24.95, Tru Organics
17. Frank Body
Frank Body is one of my favorite beauty brands out there. The company offers the most amazing scrubs ever and I can’t get enough. There’s no hiding with Frank Body – you can see the short list of ingredients right on the back of the paper bag. My favorite pick is the Coconut Coffee Scrub, which smells like the perfect summer morning, and leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft, but not oily.
Standout Product: Coconut Coffee Scrub, $17.95, Frank Body
This Korean skincare brand stands out from other brands because they focus on making multi-functional products that make your beauty routines shorter and more effective. They also use natural ingredients that are cruelty-free and eco-friendly, made in recyclable packaging and printed with soy ink. I can’t get enough of the calming herb mask, which turned me off at first, but has since become my go-to when my skin needs to feel softer.
Standout Product: Fresh Mask with Real Calming Herb, $41, Birchbox
19. Drunk Elephant
Yes, the name is adorable, but Drunk Elephant means serious business. The brand was created to be natural, cruelty free, and non-irritating. The ingredients are hand-picked and high quality. They might be a little pricey, but they work, and you don’t have the added guilt of feeling like you’re ruining your skin. If you need a new facial cream in your life, get this moisturizer. It’s the best.
Standout Product: Lala Retro Whipped Cream, $60, Drunk Elephant
20. Priti NYC
Everyone knows that nail polish and nail polish removers aren’t great for your body, but we all use them, because there aren’t many natural options out there. Priti NYC solves that problem by being an amazing luxury eco-friendly brand, with nail polishes that aren’t as harmful. There are lots of pretty colors to pick from, but I really love the Soy Nail Polish Remover, which makes me feel better about my quality of life every time I use it.
Standout Product: Soy Nail Polish Remover with Lemongrass Scent, $13, Priti NYC
Like the name promises, InstaNatural offers products that are made with natural ingredients and that work quickly. They offer lots of natural products for your skin woes, and they are definitely worth checking out, even if you haven’t seen the brand in major drugstores (probably a good sign, tbh!). The Vitamin C serum is a bestseller that is currently sold out on the website because it is that awesome.
Standout Product: Age Defying Vitamin C Serum, $22.77, Amazon
Unlike so many other beauty brands, Purxury doesn’t mass produce their products, which helps them give us items that are nontoxic, all-natural, and very effective. The brand focuses on luxury, proving that all-natural skincare can be super glam too. I love the Rescue Facial Oil, which is created with only essential oils and is super moisturizing.
Standout Product: Antioxidant Rescue Facial Oil, $49, Purxury
Elucx is a brand that was founded in Canada and offers products that are 100 percent chemical free, organic, cruelty-free, and made with packaging in reusable ingredients. The products have a unique feel to them and are honestly so pretty to look at – but even better, they really work. I love this mask, partly because it feels good, partly because the glass packaging is wonderful, and partly because it’s fun to mix it with water.
Standout Product: Argile Rose/Pink Clay Botanical Facial Mask, $25, Elucx
BOOM by Cindy Joseph focuses on pro-aging products, which means that they encourage natural beauty rather than trying to change it. Theses are products that are organic and more natural, not made with tons of chemicals. The BOOMSILK product is my personal favorite. It’s a super hydrating moisturizer that feels really light.
Standout Product: BOOMSILK $21-$58, Boom
25. Tata Harper
Sometimes all-natural skincare brands get a bad rep, but Tata Harper makes that seem ridiculous. The luxury brand offers items that are non-toxic, 100 percent natural, and picked fresh. They’re made in small batches on a farm in Vermont rather than a giant warehouse where they create 1,000 creams in five seconds (that might be dramatic, don’t quote me!). But the part about the farm in Vermont and the small batches is 100 percent true. I love Tata Harper and it was hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to, I’d say it’s this mask, which works like a dream.
Standout Product: Resurfacing Mask, $58, Tata Harper
You can always count on Asian-inspired skincare brands to be wonderful, and Tatcha is no exception. A Japanese brand based on geisha-inspired beauty routines, Tatcha offers all-natural ingredients that really work. I was skeptical of the rice powder cleanser, my favorite product of theirs, until I used it and it changed my life. A tiny pinch of this powder and some water will leave you with the softest skin of your life. No joke. These luxury products aren’t cheap, but I promise they’re worth it.
Standout Product: Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder, $65, Sephora
27. Acure Organics
Acure Organics is a sustainable company that works hard to use natural ingredients and packaging, and to give back to the world as well as give us natural skincare. I love that Acure Organics is good for you and also sold in places like Target for great prices. Acure Organics actually makes incredible shampoo and conditioner, but my favorite skincare product of theirs is the oil control moisturizer, which is great if you have oily skin.
Standout Product: Oil Control Facial Moisturizer, $16.99, Acure Organics
28. 100% Pure
Just like the name says, 100% Pure uses 100 percent natural ingredients to give you skincare that is good for you and makes a difference. I’ve shared my favorites with friends and they’ve always raved about them – I love that 100% Pure makes skincare and also fruit dyed makeup! It’s awesome. My favorite skincare product is this cleanser, which is super refreshing and lovely.
Standout Product: Mint White Tea Facial Cleanser, $29, 100% Pure
29. Nourish Organic
Nourish Organic is one of the brands that started making all-natural products before it became more popular. They were one of the first companies to work with the USDA to create products made with organic, natural ingredients. Their products are affordable, effective, and good for you. I love the natural deodorant, which really works and is great if you’re stressed over regular deodorant ingredients.
Standout Product: Fresh & Natural Organic Stick Deodorant, $9.99, Nourish Organic
Yuni was created by a husband and wife team who discovered their passion through their yoga practices, which really speaks to me, because I *love* yoga. Through their study of a yogi lifestyle, they ended up creating all-natural beauty products that use highly effective ingredients. I love the body balm because it’s for more than just your face – it’s for your whole body, and it feels so dreamy.
Standout Product: All Purpose Body Balm, $25, Yuni
Which one of these brands have you tried? What did we forget to include? Let me know in the comments.
