Somehow, my closet has become a bottomless pit of old shirts. I’m sure you know the struggle: you have that ratty old t-shirt from the camp you went to five years ago, or one of your old favorite tees that has an unfortunate rip in it. We all have a collection of shirts that we don’t want to throw out, even though they definitely haven’t fit since 2010. Maybe it has sentimental value, or you hope that one day someone will invent a washing machine that stretches clothes instead of shrinking them, but I doubt that will be available any time soon. So what do you do?
Surprisingly, there are a lot of things you can do! I’m not talking about just turning t-shirts into tanks. Besides upgrading old shirts into new shirts, you can also make a ton of cute accessories out of old t-shirts that you would have never thought of. You can cut, sew, or braid old t-shirts to make something brand-new and totally unique. So go ahead and dig through your closet, find some old shirts and try these amazing upcyling projects:
1. Make an easy fringe scarf.
Even though it’s summer, the lightweight t-shirt fabric makes for a great scarf for a breezy summer night.
2. Turn t-shirt scraps into unique bracelets.
This will make a cute (and durable) friendship bracelet!
3. Make an adorable flower ring!
This piece of jewelry will definitely make a statement.
4. Add a braided belt to your favorite pair of jeans.
You can use old t-shirt scraps for so many things, including a cute belt that will look great with a pair of jeans or with a sundress!
5. Upgrade your flip-flops with t-shirt straps.
Using t-shirt fabric for your sandals will be much more comfortable that the normal plastic straps!
6. Make unique throw pillows.
This is a great keepsake of an old shirt from a vacation or event. Make it into a decorative pillow to add to your room!
7. Use old t-shirt scraps for a simple headband.
Keep your hair out of your face with a simple headband.
8. Or braid many scraps together for a more intricate look.
If you want to stand out a little more, make make a thicker head band out of multiple straps!
9. Make a no-sew tote.
This tutorial is SO easy and so useful! You can never have too many totes.
10. Get really craft with this upcycled t-shirt rug
This one is definitely a little bit more advanced and requires a lot of shirts, but the outcome is a really cool custom rug!
11. Create cool pom-poms
Pom-poms can be used to decorate anything. You can make fake flowers to liven up your room or make a pom pom key chain!
12. Crochet a chord necklace.
