Just like with clothing and certain accessories, the summer means you should change up your makeup routine a bit. While any makeup product can, of course, be used during any time of the year you want to use it, there are certain products that are just better for the warmer weather and longer days. These include makeup products that have more staying power, work a little bit better with sweat and humidity, and look good in the sun. You don’t need to revamp your entire makeup drawer if you don’t have the money or if you don’t really care that much – but there are some new products that are absolutely worth checking out.
Personally, I like to lighten my makeup during the summer months. I forgo foundation and primer for lotion with SPF and a tinted moisturizer. I cut down on bronzer and like to stick with blush and highlighter. For my eyes, I opt for golds and browns, lots of mascara, and little eyeliner. And for lips, I take advantage of the warmer weather and sunny days and wear lots and lots of brights, or alternatively, warm nudes.
You can do whatever you want with your makeup, but if you’re open to new ideas, I have lots of suggestions. I’ve tried tons of new and classic products, and have come up with a list of things you need that you didn’t even know you needed. Here are 26 new makeup products for summer you should buy:
1. Katy Perry’s CoverGirl Matte Lipstick
Katy Perry recently teamed up with CoverGirl to come out with her own line of matte lipsticks, and even those who aren’t fans of hers will love them. Although they dry matte, the lipsticks aren’t super drying. The colors are also great – my personal favorite is Crimson Cat, a bright red that works for any time of the year, but especially for a summer night out. And they’re inexpensive! Grab ’em while you can.
CoverGirl Katy Perry Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Crimson Cat, $8.99, Ulta
2. Kat Von D Lock It Concealer
Kat Von D’s makeup line is beloved by beauty gurus for a reason – everything works like a dream. I recently went to an event with Kat Von D to hear about her new formulas, including the new Lock It Concealer Creme. It works just as well, if not better, than the original (which has been known to cover up EVERYTHING), and it comes in more shades, including a white concealer (which is great for blending). Although it’s not out until July, you can still buy the old, amazing formula now.
Kat Von D Lock It Concealer, $25, Sephora
3. Vaseline Lip Therapy
Lip balm is equally important in the summer as it is in the winter – the sun can dry your lips out just as much as the cold. I’ve been stocking up on this Vaseline Lip Treatment, which leaves lips feeling soft and smooth even when it isn’t on, and gives a nice glossy shine. The Pink Bubbly version is a gorgeous, super sheer pink. Get it now as it’s limited edition and won’t be around forever.
Vaseline Lip Therapy in Pink Bubbly will be available starting July 3 exclusively in the hand and body lotion aisle at Walgreens for $4.99
4. Eyeko Me and My Shadow Stick
I don’t know about you guys, but I personally love a good two-in-one product, especially for the summer when I’m keeping things more low-maintenance and traveling more often. Enter the Eyeko Shadow Stick – it’s a shadow and a little blending brush in one compact container. This is perfect for touch-ups on the go, or just swipe a bit over your eyes and blend for the perfect easy summer look.
Eyeko Me and My Shadow Stick, $25, Eyeko
5. Benefit High Brow Glow
While the perfectly sculpted brow is slowly becoming a thing of the past as beauty editors embrace a more slightly messy look, this brow pencil is still perfection. It’s more of a brow highlighter and should be used on your brow bone and over your arch. It defines brows and brightens up your face. I sometimes use mine in the inner corners of my eyes as well.
Benefit High Brow Glow, $22, Benefit Cosmetics
6. Flower Brow Mascara
Speaking of brows, let’s talk about this little guy from Flower Beauty. This all-in-one brow tool is ideal for traveling or throwing in your bag for touch-ups after a day at the beach. Twist it up to reveal a subtle tint of color, and use the brush to keep brows in place.
Flower All-In-One Brow Mascara, $6.98, Walmart
7. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick
Stila’s liquid lipstick might not be new, but it is definitely a cult favorite and deserves to be here. Liquid lipsticks can be rough in the summer because of how drying they are, but Stila’s isn’t uncomfortable and it delivers great pigment. I personally love the shade Bella, which is a hot pink so bright that it will only look perfect with a little bit of a golden glow from the sun.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Bella, $24, Birchbox
8. Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Highlighter
This summer, the biggest beauty trend is a healthy, glossy glow on your skin that is the opposite of picture perfect contouring. Get that look with Becca and Jaclyn Hill’s latest collaboration: this Champagne Face Palette, which includes two gorgeous highlighters and three blushes. The shades are crazy gorgeous and look amazing on summer skin.
Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Face Palette, $52, Sephora
9. Bare Minerals Gen Nude Lipstick
So far I’ve shown you a bunch of bright lipsticks, but what if you’re not into that? That’s fine – Bare Minerals has recently released their Gen Nude collection, a collection full of – you guessed it – various nude shades. These gorgeous shade are great for a hint of color on days when you want to look as natural as possible.
Bare Minerals Gen Nude Radiant Lipstick, $20, Ulta
10. Stila Perfect Me, Perfect Hue Palette
Achieve the perfect glowy summer look with this little palette from Stila. The beautiful eye shadows make for an excellent daytime smokey eye, while the pretty blushes warm up skin instantly. And I love the gold packaging.
Stila Perfect Me, Perfect Hue Eye and Face Palette, $39, Sephora
11. Sephora Collection Setting Spray
One of the best ways to keep your makeup in place on super hot days is to use a good setting spray. This one from Sephora is excellent – it doesn’t feel sticky or stiff, it has no scent, and it keeps everything on your face, exactly where you want it.
Sephora Collection Beauty Amplifier Setting Spray, $16, Sephora
12. Laura Mercier CandleGlow Soft Luminous Foundation
Everyone says to use powder foundation in the summer, and I agree with that – but I still love this Laura Mercier foundation. It’s incredible. It is super, super lightweight but delivers amazing coverage at the same time. I normally don’t use foundation at all in the summer, but have been making an exception for this new foundation. It just feels and looks so good that I don’t even feel like I’m wearing it!
Laura Mercier CandleGlow Soft Luminous Foundation, $48, Sephora
13. Lash Star Full Control Lash Sculpting Mascara
A great mascara should always be in your makeup bag regardless of the season. I’m loving this mascara from Lash Star, which has two ends: one for volume, one for length. This is mascara layering made so simple.
Lash Star Full Control Lash Sculpting Mascara, $35, Lash Star
14. Make Up For Ever Eye Pencils
When I received a bag of the new Make Up For Ever eye pencils made with ChariXCX, I literally squealed. The colors are gorgeous and apply so nicely – they also stay put. If you’re not into bright eyeliner, you can even use these as a shadow by blending them.
Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil, $21, Sephora
15. Chosungah 22 Ink Jet Tatt Lip Stain
Lip stains are popular for summer because they give a pretty hint of color without looking too obvious. They also stay on forever, and that’s especially true for this one from Chosungah 22. It has “Tatt” in the name for a reason – this stuff does not move. It’s perfect for the hot days you want lip color without having to reapply.
Chosungah 22 Ink Jet Tatt Lip Stain, $20, Sephora
16. Tarte Lippie Lingerie
Ugh, if I could marry this stuff, I would. Tarte Lippie Lingerie is their new line of matte nude lip pencils. Tarte’s lip pencils are insanely hydrating and feel so good on your lips. I love the new nude shades, which are so beautiful to look at and use. Whisper is my personal favorite.
Tarte Lippie Lingerie in Whisper, $24, Ulta
17. Urban Decay Vice Lipstick
Looking for something a little more, say, outgoing? Urban Decay Vice lipsticks are for you. There are a ton of shades and most of them are bright and fun – some are metallic, some are sparkly, some are bold, and all are gorgeous.
Urban Decay Vice Lipstick, $17, Urban Decay
18. Tarte Glossy Lip Paint
Wait, can I marry this one instead? Tarte’s Lip Paints are one of my favorite formulas EVER, and I was super excited to try the new glossy ones – and I wasn’t disappointed. From the nudes to the darks, there’s something for everyone. These don’t feel like sticky gloss – they look and feel like the best gloss ever.
Tarte Glossy Lip Paint, $20, Ulta
19. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
Tinted moisturizer is my number one go-to for summer makeup, and it’s always the Laura Mercier one that I go back to. With just the right amount of color, this has more coverage than you would expect while still feeling like a moisturizer. It’s not new, but it’s a gem.
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, $44, Sephora
20. Volition Thankha Radiant Bronzer
Liquid bronzer is a *thing* right now, and if you’re going to try it, I recommend using this one. This shimmery color is like a subtle bronzer and highlighter in one. I love using it for summer nights with just tinted moisturizer.
Volition Thanakha Radiant Bronzer, $40, Volition Beauty
21. Waxelene Lip Balm
If you would prefer to go for a lip balm that’s more natural, go for this Waxelene option. It’s super moisturizing and leaves lips feeling incredible. It’s not even just lip balm, though! You can use it on dry spots like your elbows or nose, use it to stop chafing, and even use it as an after shave. It’s an excellent item to always have in your handbag.
Waxelene Lip Balm, $6.12, Amazon
22. Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara
If you know anything about me, it should be that Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara is my number one favorite product in the universe. You should buy ColourPop, because their products are awesome. Their new Sheer Lippie Stix come out in July and deliver a light swipe of color that feel great.

25. Nuance Salma Hayek Eye Palette
Not all eye palettes are expensive! This one from Salma Hayek’s line Nuance is one of my favorite little palettes. The colors are so pretty and have great range – you can do something neutral or more dramatic here.
Nuance Salma Hayek Endless Eye Effects Shadow Collection in Sunset Visions, $13.99, CVS
26. Essence All About Matt! Fixing Compact Powder
