How To Deal With Camel Toe Once And For All

Hi Heather,

I am 12 turning 13 in two months and I have camel toe all the time. I know everybody says to avoid it just don’t wear tight shorts, but mine is really bad! I can see it in my bikini and my underwear. I can even see it in my sports shorts! It really makes me self conscious. Is there anything I can do to get rid of it?

I have good news, and I have bad news. The bad news: you’re never going to be able to “get rid” of camel toe forever. You can try to prevent it, but it’s not something that can just disappear for the rest of your life thanks to one little change. The good news! Camel toe is totally normal, and many, many women experience it. You’re not alone, you’re not weird, and to be totally honest with you, you’re probably the only one paying attention to it.

Before we get into how you can prevent camel toe, let’s break down what it actually is. It’s not complicated science: camel toe refers to that moment when you can see the outline of a woman’s vulva through her clothing. As Urban Dictionary so eloquently puts it, “When her pants are so tight you can read her lips!” When a girl’s vaginal lips are visible through clothing, it ends up looking like a little camel toe, which is exactly where it got the name. There you have it! It’s a weird name for a pretty normal thing that just happens, and I don’t know why people make such a big deal out of it.

Camel toe typically happens more to girls who have larger vaginal lips, or, for lack of a better word, puffier lips. Let me be firm in saying that there is nothing wrong with having a vulva that is more pronounced or that is on the larger side. Vaginas are made in all shapes and sizes and there is literally nothing wrong with having more visible lips. It just happens to some girls! It’s nothing to be embarrassed about! But because it tends to happen more if your vag looks a certain way, it can be hard to prevent.

The advice you’ve heard is correct – camel toe is most often visible if you’re wearing tight shorts. But it can also be visible in tight sweatpants, leggings or jeans… basically, any clothing that is on the tighter side. That said, it makes so much sense that it would be visible in bathing suits and underwear – those are naturally fitted against your vag!

If you want to try to prevent camel toe, you can avoid wearing any tight bottoms or any bathing suits – and truth be told, I think that’s silly. There are other options, and although they aren’t foolproof, they might help: wear underwear that is on the thicker side, choose pants or shorts that have a wider elastic waistband that sits above the navel or just below it (to prevent them from riding up and causing camel toe), purchase items that have good lining (there are bathing suit bottoms with thicker lining out there), avoid very thin fabrics, and wear darker colors (camel toe will always stand out more in white). Some sites suggest wearing panty liners, but doing so every day can actually cause vaginal infections because they don’t let your vagina breathe. You can even try buying one of those weird anti-camel toe products if you’re feeling desperate.

At the end of the day, though, I want you to remember that a little camel toe is no big deal. If it’s really out of control, you can always pull a Khloe Kardashian and embrace it – Khloe named her ever-present camel toe “Camille the camel” and calls it out before the media can. Hey, why not, right? Good luck!
