There’s a problem with online dating. Or, to be more exact, there are many problems with online dating, but one that I find to be particularly vexing. The main problem with Tinder and other dating apps, as far as I can tell, is that everyone on it has vastly different ideas of what they’d like to get out of the experience. Some people legitimately want a relationship. Others want a casual hookup. Others just want friends. And, of course, there are those who just use online dating as a means of preying on poor, vulnerable people who are just looking for love and human connection to boost their own internet clout.
I was just confronted by someone I catfished on tinder IRL and felt uncomfortable so I snapped a candid pic pic.twitter.com/Y2U3knwPmv

(Guilty. Sorry. I’m cutting back, though.)
Basically, it all boils down to how good you are at expressing your own expectations. And, the other day, you probably saw a good example of someone who did not express his own expectations on an online dating site very well–a girl, Ashley, posted a screenshot of a conversation she’d had on Bumble. In it, as a means of making small talk, she asked the guy she was talking to what he did for a living–you know, like you’d ask someone where they go to school, what they like to do for fun, what kinds of food they like to eat. For some reason, the guy, Connor, took a lot of offense to this, and saw it as an opportunity to air his grievances on the “neo-liberal, Beyonce, feminist cancer which plagues society.” It was, uh, messy.
That’s not the only time a guy has gotten decidedly weird on a dating app, though. Check out the Bumble interaction below, as well as some other times that guys took it too far on an online dating site:
1. I mean…come on.
2. DUDE. CHILL.
4. Makes you think:
5. Also thought-provoking:
6. Ah, yes. Negging:
7. This guy wants his $3 back:
9. A reasonable trade-off:
10. This system is maybe rigged:
11. A good example of a situation escalating a little too quickly, here:
12. “No offense:”
13. Aaaand goodbye. Forever:
