7 Of The Craziest Facts About Bras

Wearing a bra is something I am so used to doing that I don’t even question it. I (unfortunately) wear one every day in order to look like a functioning member of society. I envy those girls who don’t wear them everyday and manage to look fabulous, but I’ve been strapping one on every day since I was about 13, so I feel like it’s too late to turn back now. But after digging around a little, I realized that a bra is a complete mystery to me. There are so many types, styles and sizes, I don’t even know where to begin.

I went deep into the history of bras. We’re talking way, way back into the 14th century. I found out some interesting things that I didn’t know about this article of clothing that is so vital in my life. Some scientists believe that bras don’t even NEED to be worn. Why aren’t people talking about this?! Check out these crazy facts about bras:


They Have Been Around Since Ancient Greece

Even though the term "bra," short for "brassiere," has been around since the early 20th century, evidence of women binding their breasts can be traced back to Ancient Greece. Women would wrap wool or linen across their chests and pin the back.

The First Sports Bra Was Made Out Of Two Jock Straps

Apparently people in the 70's liked to get creative, because they re-purposed jock straps into sports bras.The first sports bra was invented in 1977 when a woman complained to a costume designer about how uncomfortable regular bras can be while trying to exercise. It was nicknamed the "Jockbra." I'm happy that nickname didn't stick.

The Most Expensive Bra Is $15 Million

Victoria's Secret's Red Hot Fantasy Bra debuted in 2000 and is made up of 1,300 gemstones and was worn by Gisele Bündchen. You could buy this bra, or buy 56,000 years of Netflix, it's up to you.

Your Bra Size Will Change

Most women will experiences changes in their bra sizes throughout their lifetime. This could be attributed to weight loss, hormones or pregnancy. Even smoking can be attributed to change in breast size and shape, due to the breaking down of a protein that gives your skin elasticity. So maybe don't buy that $15 million bra unless you only want to wear it once.

Bras Might Not Actually Be Necessary

A 2013 French Study reported that women might not actually need to wear them. In his 15 year study, Dr Jean-Denis Rouillon, discovered that bras actually do not prevent sagging, which is why most women want to wear bras in the first place.

Cup Sizes Weren't Invented Until The 1920's

Even though bras have been around since the 1800's, cup sizes didn't exist until 1922, when Russian immigrant Ida Rosenthal decided that not everyone should be wearing the same size, and decided to add cups. I'd hate to think about where we'd be without Ida.

$16 Billion Are Spent On Bras Annually

I can't even calculate how many years of Netflix that is. The billions of dollars spent on bras every year is probably due to the fact that prices can range from $10 to $100. Having boobs is not cheap.
