We all have those moments when we peer into our closets, try on a few things, and think, “Wow, I have nothing to wear.” We all look in the mirror and stare at our reflection, endlessly, only to conclude that something needs to be tweaked, but we can’t put our finger on what that something is. We all get really sick of our style, even if we think our style is dope, because we’re humans and we’re fickle AF. Style ruts happen, but staying in one is optional.
If you’re really tired of your look at the moment, check out these seven easy ways to get out of your style rut. Some of these changes are pretty radical, while others can be done in just a couple of minutes. No matter what, the goal is to get some much needed inspo and think outside the box for a bit. Don’t be scared, it’s time to try something new!
Tweak Your Color SchemesChanging up the colors you wear and the colors you combine them with can give you so many great new outfit ideas. For example, for most of my life, I cringed at the idea of wearing all one color. I called it the crayon look and sneered at anyone who rocked it, including my mom. Now? I think that it can actually look really cool. Find similar shades of blue, green, pink, yellow, etc, and embrace the crayon look! Finding shades that are slightly different can add some depth, too. Give it a try! UNIF
Switch Up Your MakeupAre you basically known for your signature red lip and cat eye? Maybe rock a nude lip instead and change your eyeliner color from black to white or an electric blue. Changing up your makeup can be just the thing to fix your stagnant style. Pinterest
Change Your HairIf you feel like something about your look is missing or boring you to tears, a new hairstyle can make a huge difference. I spend most of the year rocking a fro! But every now and then I'm just so tired of it that I decide to completely change my hair style by rocking box braids (which you can see in this pic). If I'm not getting braids, I'm dyeing my hair a new color so that I have something new to work with. The way your hair looks honestly changes the way your clothes can look! Honestly, I have some outfits that I think look better with braids and some I think look better with a fro. Even certain colors look better or worse depending on my hair color. It can be a challenge, but it's worth it to get out of a style rut. Instagram
Edit Your ClosetSometimes having too many options can be a bad thing. Your closet is a good example of that. It's time to get rid of what you don't wear and focus on what you do. Then, you can really find out what your wardrobe is missing. Maybe you're in a rut because you don't have any pants that fit properly anymore. Maybe you need more blouses! Who knows what you'll discover. Clueless
Consider Starting A Capsule WardrobeCapsule collections are growing in popularity, especially as more and more people embrace minimalist looks. Basically, a capsule wardrobe consists of a select number of clothing options from a very limited color palette. The goal is to create a ton of different looks from the same set of clothes for an entire season. Personally, I don't think I could manage this--the color restriction stresses me out--but it does make getting dressed a lot easier, and if we're honest with ourselves, we often wear the same clothes over and over again anyway. Give it some research, it might be right for you! Pinterest
Focus On AccessorizingMaybe you want to forget about clothes entirely and focus on the little things, like accessories. Decide that you want to wear earrings more often. Collect pins to liven up your boring t-shirts. Find some fun patches to iron on to your favorite jacket. The options are limitless! Pinterest
Revamp Your Old FavoritesDIY projects aren't for everyone, but they might solve your style problems, at least temporarily. Have a band shirt that you love but never really wear anymore? Give it new life by turning it into a crop top! Turn an old pair of jeans you never wear into a pair of sweet cut off shorts. Find a project and go for it, it might be just what you needed.
