11 Things You Have To Do Right Now If You’re Single

Being single is one of those things that most people are conditioned to dislike. While the term “old maid” doesn’t really ring in the same sense of panic as it might have in the era of Pride And Prejudice, certain stigmas and stereotypes about single people persist today, whether it’s in relation to prom dates or having dates for fake Hallmark holidays.  Singlehood, then, is something that’s meant to be tolerated until you meet your soul mate (or, at the very least, some rando to settle for). But, like most things that people tend to freak out about, being single isn’t actually that bad. In fact, more women than ever are choosing to remain single throughout adulthood.

Does being single in middle school, high school, or college mean that you’re going to be single for the rest of your life? Of course not. But there’s definitely no reason why you should freak about being single now, should that happen to be your current state of being. In fact, being single is something that you can actually enjoy. All it takes is a little change in perspective–so, check out these things you have to do if you’re single to make your life a little bit better:

1. Be more ~spontaneous~

spontaneous

You are beholden to nobody (okay, maybe to your parents). But, besides that, everything you do is totally up to you. Go on more road trips. Visit a psychic. Go solo to a school dance. As long as you’re not actually running away from home or skipping school to do these things, it’s a great way to feel more free. When you’re in a relationship, you have to worry and think about how your actions affect that other person in your life. Take advantage of this time when you don’t have to do that!

2. Hang out more with your single friends.

Or, you know, just friends in general. Whatever. Sisterhood is important! When you’re in a relationship, you won’t be able to see them nearly as much as you want to.

3. Embrace any and all body hair.

It’s not that dating anyone should actually force you to shave–what you do with your body is your own business–it’s just that not dating anyone is a really, really good reason not to.

4. Read more.

Again, you shouldn’t not be reading just because you’re dating someone, but being single frees up more time to do it. If you’ve always wanted to read Anna Karenina because you feel that it will make you a more well-rounded individual, well, now’s the time.

5. Start a new hobby.

What’s the thing that you’ve always wanted to make your thing? Knitting? Writing? Being that person who pulls out a guitar and plays “Wonderwall” at parties? Take it up.  This can be your life now.

6. Don’t dwell on exes.

exes

Easier said than done?  Yes. But thinking about past relationships or flings and what might have been might be the best way to make being single feel absolutely terrible. Delete them from Facebook and Insta if you must–just don’t obsess over them. You’ll be much happier.

7. Don’t wait around for one person to show up and make you happy.

If you’re not thinking about exes while you’re single, it can be easy to languish around waiting for your dream girl or guy to materialize out of thin air and magically transform your life.

8. Connect with ol’ Number One.

know-yourself

AKA you. As Drake would say, now is the time to “know yourself.” If you’ve been in a relationship for a while, it can be hard to remember what it’s like to just be you without someone else always around. Being single gives you time to figure that out.

9. Think about other women who proved that being single does not mean you’re a loser.

Oprah, Mindy Kaling, and Tyra Banks, to name but a few. Their being single doesn’t define them, but it’s cool to see women who stayed single for much of their lives and also accomplished so much in spite (or perhaps because) of that.

10. Eat more pizza.

11. Really commit and get a bunch of cats.

It’s a stereotype, yes. But fun one.
