I’m not trying to be dramatic, but I am almost positive–like, 99.8% certain–that body acne is the worst thing that could ever, ever happen to a human person. I am leaving that .2% for incidentals, such as natural disasters, a sudden strike of disease, and the eventual realization that maybe body acne isn’t *actually* the worst thing in the world. But, if you’ve got a particularly bad breakout on your chest or back–with no idea what’s even causing it–chances are good that it probably feels pretty disastrous. No one would blame you for that–besides not looking too great, exactly, body acne can be physically uncomfortable, too.
Fortunately, having bacne or buttne or chest acne (chacne? I feel like that one hasn’t really caught on yet) doesn’t actually have to be a permanent state of being. There have been a ton of innovations in the body acne sector lately, and, as such, there are a ton of great new body acne products that you probably don’t even know about. But, fortunately, we’ve done the research for you. So without further ado, check out these awesome and effective body acne products that you had no idea you needed:
Body WashYour best bet for beating body acne is starting out with a nice, simple body wash. Try one with salicylic acid, which attacks the "live" acne while also getting rid of dark blemishes left by old breakouts. Buy it at Amazon for $5.49
Body ScrubIf you feel like you need some more exfoliation, you can also try a scrub--this will help scrub away dead skin and deliver the acne medication faster. Buy it at Drugstore.com for $6.99
Butt Acne LotionButtne, which is usually caused by yoga pants and tight underwear, can be equal parts painful and humiliating. Fortunately, there's a product that's designed specifically to combat that--this lotion that, as you can probably tell, you just put on your butt. It has exfoliaters which blast away any rough, dead skin cells as well as moisturizing components that prevent your butt from over-drying.There may be nothing worse than the idiom "smooth as a baby's bottom," but that's probably the way your butt is going to be if you use this product. Buy it at Drugstore.com for $27.99
Body Acne SprayIt often feels like the worst back breakouts happen in the most hard-to-reach places--you know, like that crop of zits that's right in between your shoulder blades? Body acne sprays make this much easier to approach--all you have to do is spritz a little on any affected area. Still can't reach? Have your mom or one of your good friends do it. That is exactly what unconditional love is for. Buy it at Amazon for $7.14
Benzoyl Peroxide CreamThe skin on your back is two to four times thicker than the skin on your face, so you need a high percentage of benzoyl peroxide so you get sufficient treatment. For this to be effective, apply it to your chest and back in the morning and at night. Buy it at Amazon for $5.49
Body-Clearing PadsOne of the most common causes of back and chest acne is residual sweat sitting on your body--especially if you're also wearing tight-fitting clothing, like sports bras or workout tanks. If you can't jump in the shower right after soccer practice or the gym, stick some acne pads in your bag. You can do a quick swipe under your sports bra so your sweat isn't totally, like, festering, then rinse off for real later whenever you get the chance. Buy it at Proactiv for $36
Bar SoapBar soap can be a little too tough for your face, but it's a great product for your back, chest, and butt if you've got breakouts there. It provides excellent exfoliation and dissolves the excess oil that can cause acne--plus, it's super easy to travel with, if you're looking for something to take with you on any upcoming vacations. Buy it at Drugstore.com for $4.02
Sulfur OintmentIf you've been using benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid for a while and you're suspicious that it's not really working anymore, you're definitely not the only one--acne can actually develop a resistance to conventional acne products, so it's not uncommon for certain products to become less effective over time. If this seems to be the case for you, try out sulfur ointment. It works particularly well on the upper back--since it dries up any zits there--and your skin can't develop a resistance to it. Buy it at Walmart for $4.60
