Bikini season is fast approaching, and it often brings up a myriad of feelings in girls’ minds. Women experience a lot of pressure to fit into a mold that is just flat-out unattainable for most body types. I wish I could say it’s just societal pressure from reading magazines or watching movies, but it also comes from close to home, like family members, significant others, and friends. This can cause a lot of anxiety and stress when thinking about strutting around in a bikini. I have a lot of friends who work hard to look how they want to look in bikinis, but also feel miserable trying to attain that image. They’re constantly monitoring what they eat and have almost obsessive rules they have to abide by. It affects their relationships and self esteem in a negative way. For me, that’s not worth it.
I’ve started focusing less on the bikini, and more on the most important accessory: confidence. I know it sounds cheesy, but just walking around owning your body is the most important aspect of bikini season. Instead of keeping my coverup on or covering my body with my arms, I just walk around like, “Look at me,” and it feels amazing. You don’t have to have a perfect body to enjoy bikini season.
That said, here are the thoughts that go through everyone’s head during the summer months:
1. “So what?”
You might feel pressure to do something with your body at first, but the you really think about it, and you’re like, “So what?!”
2. “I’m not sure that my old suit will fit.”
Do you have to try it on?
3. “I really don’t want to go shopping for a suit.”
It’s not just about how you look. It’s about the terrible lighting and the uncomfortable idea of trying on a bikini bottom over underwear. It just doesn’t work.
4. “Well… guess it’s time to shave everything.”
You’ve gotten through the last couple months with minimal shaving, but no longer. Now you’ve got to do it all. I mean, okay, you don’t have to, but a lot of girls want to.
5. “The top fits, but the bottom doesn’t!”
Finding a set that works for your top and bottom is like finding a needle in a haystack.
6. “Bathing suits are so expensive!”
$40 for each piece? There’s so little fabric- how does it cost that much?! Why aren’t they sold together?!! Why do they cost more than guys’? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
7. “Where do all these straps go?”
The style nowadays involves so many cutouts, straps, and intricate designs that it can cause a conundrum in the dressing room. Whatever happened to a simple, solid suit?!
8. “What’s with all the padding?”
You get that some girls want padding in their suits, but it seems like a lot of padding. Is that really necessary?
9. “Should I go tanning?”
There’s nothing wrong with being pale, but there’s a difference between pale skin and dry, pasty winter skin. Faux-tanning will not solve that. Grab some self-tanner, or just chill.
10. “Maybe I’ll just pretend it’s not happening.”
That usually works, right? RIGHT.
11. “Does anyone actually follow these bikini body tips?”
Twelve days of eating only lemonade and cayenne pepper? NO THANKS.
12. “Maybe I could go on a diet.”
