Having sex when you have your period is definitely taboo, but I promise it’s not as gross as you might think it is. After doing some research, I’ve learned that a lot of couples have period sex, more than I actually realized. Maybe the thought of having sex when you’re menstruating makes you cringe a little because you picture a bloody massacre all over white sheets. I used to feel the same way, but trust me, this exaggeration is far from the truth. And actually, having sex when you have your period can even be good for you! There are a lot of surprising things about period sex no one really tells you about.
It’s understandable that some days of your period, all you want to do it crawl up in bed with a heating bed, and eat some chocolate. Other days, you may be super turned on and are ready to get down and dirty with bae. Luckily, you can totally do that if you know how to avoid a potential mess – and it can be really great. Whether you’re a period sex pro, or if you’ve never tried it before, read on for eight shocking things no one ever tells you about period sex:
Orgasms Can Help Relieve Menstrual CrampsIf you suffer from really bad cramps during your period, sex might be just what you need. During an orgasm, the body releases oxytocin, a hormone that relieves the contraction of the uterus – so it can quite literally relieve cramps. The body also releases dopamine, which can put you in an excellent mood. Source: iStock
Guys Are Not As Grossed Out By Period Sex As You Might ThinkWe typically assume guys will get turned off by having period sex. This is far from the truth! We typically assume guys will get turned off by having period sex. And while some dudes may be totally freaked out by it, not every single of them minds. Most guys are not grossed out by some blood, and they’re more than willing to try it out. All you have to do is ask. If he’s not interested, he probably won’t be a jerk about it. Don’t feel embarrassed to bring it up. Source: iStock
Sex Can Shorten The Length Of Your PeriodSex can help make your period shorter. During an orgasm, your uterus contracts, which helps quickly get rid of the blood and uterine lining. Due to this quick shedding, your period may not last as long as it normally does, which is amazing! Source: iStock
You Can Still Get Pregnant During SexJust because you have your period, it doesn't mean you're totally in the clear of not getting pregnant from unprotected sex. Some periods last more than a week and sometimes a woman’s ovulation can overlap with menstruation,” says Tara Ford, a physician assistant at the Medical Center for Female Sexuality in Purchase, New York. You should definitely still wear a condom to protect yourself. Worried about lube? Your period blood will act as a natural lubricant, which is pretty awesome. Source: iStock
You Can Help Minimize A Bloody MessIf you are worried about staining your bed sheets, lay a towel down where you are going to have sex. If you are still nervous about making a mess, there is always the option of wearing menstrual cups or female condoms, which can help control the amount of blood that comes out of your vagina during sex. You Might See Brown Or Red Clumps Of Blood When You Wipe After SexSeeing brown or red clumps when you wipe in the bathroom after sex is nothing to be concerned about. The clumps of blood are just blood clots that are passing through your vagina if you are experiencing a heavy flow. If those clots get trapped during sex, they'll be released afterwards when you go to the bathroom. Source: iStock
Your Period Might Sometimes Stop During SexYou may experience your period temporarily stopping during sex if your period is on the lighter side. If you have a light flow during sex, the blood doesn't always flow outside of your vagina due to the pressure on the uterus. On the contrary, if you're having sex when your period has a heavy flow, you won't experience this, as your vagina will still bleed. Source: iStock
Certain Sex Positions Work Better Than OthersDue to gravity, certain sex positions can result in a messy situation. Being on top for instance, can activate your flow, causing you to bleed heavily during sex. Missionary, with you laying on your back, or laying on your side are better options and will make less of a mess. Source: iStock
