Prom season is fast approaching, which means that it’s time to start thinking of the perfect prom dress! Do you have an idea of what you want to wear? Or do you have a certain style in mind? Well, if not, don’t panic! Chances are, you’re not the only one.
For some of you, it might seem like prom is still decades away, and for others, it might be fast approaching. Even if you still have a few months left, you should probably start thinking of the kind of dress that you want to wear. After all, waiting until the last minute can only lead to disaster because you’ll have less options. You’ll have to deal with crowds, you’ll be stressed, and if anything happens to the dress, you won’t have time to find a new one. So since it’s still early and you have the extra time, why not take advantage of it and start browsing through a few prom dresses?
Check out these 11 easy tips that will make your prom dress shopping experience a lot easier.
1. Start looking early.
If you start to look now, you’ll be at a huge advantage because you’ll have a larger selection of dresses to choose from. Even better, you’ll have extra time to get your dress altered if you find one that doesn’t quite fit right. You won’t need to worry about finding the right dress at the last minute.
2. If you need inspiration, do your research.
Most girls usually have a style in mind for their prom dress, but looking up some of the latest trends for inspiration wouldn’t hurt. Keeping an eye on red carpet fashion from events like the Oscars and the Golden Globes is a good place to start, but if you want to go for something a bit more unique, you could always try to get inspiration from your favorite movies, shows, and books.
3. Don’t just try your dresses on, take them for a test drive.
The last thing you want is to go to prom in an uncomfortable dress that gets in the way of your fun. Your prom dress should look fabulous and be comfortable at the same time, so when you try your dresses on, try walking around and sitting down in them. You should never have to sacrifice comfort for fashion!
4. Bring your heels with you.
If you want to avoid tripping over the hem of your dress, then trying it on with heels (if you plan to wear them) is a must. It’ll help you sort out the appropriate measurements. and give you a better feel of how the dress will look.
5. Don’t rush through the process.
Finding the perfect dress will take some time, so on the day that you decide to go shopping for your prom dress, make sure that you have nothing else planned. If you try to squeeze it in with 10 other activities in the same day you’ll only overwhelm yourself and get frustrated during the process.
6. Don’t get stuck on one dress. Keep an open mind.
I feel like we’ve all had that moment where we fell in love with a certain prom dress and grew so obsessed that we refused to get anything else. In most cases, however, that perfect dress is either out of stock or not available in the right color and size (I know, it sucks). But this is exactly why you need to be flexible when it comes to shopping for prom dresses. There are so many amazing options out there, and obsessing over one particular design will only cause you to miss out on some other amazing styles.
7. Feel free to carry a picture with you.
If you fall in love with a certain dress and you want to find something that’s similar, carry a photo to show the salesperson exactly what you have in mind. They might not be able to give you the exact same thing, but it’ll give them a better idea of what you’re looking for.
8. Figure out your budget and stick to it.
One of the worst feelings in the world is trying on a beautiful dress and then finding out that the price is way out of your budget. So before you even begin to look, let the salesperson know what your budget is, and if you’re doing your shopping online, filter the results so you can only see the dresses you can afford.
9. Don’t forget about the undergarments.
If you want to avoid having your bra straps show through your dress on prom night, you should definitely ask about the appropriate undergarments. You don’t necessarily have to get them from the same store (although that’s definitely more convenient), but just make sure that you’re clear on what kind would work best with your prom dress.
9. Feel free to take someone with you.
There’s no harm in getting a second opinion, so feel free to take a friend or family member with you to help you out! This will only make things easier (and a little more fun)!
10. But don’t take a huge group of people.
Taking an entire group of five or more people might sound like fun, but this will only make things more overwhelming for you. You’re more likely to get distracted by them, and even worse, you might feel pressured to get a dress that you don’t really like.
11. Find the dress that suits you.
Don’t worry too much about what other people will think. This is your opportunity to choose what you like, so go for the dress that you really love, even if it’s not that popular or trendy!
