Before I explain why I think coffee is overrated, I should make one thing clear: I actually love coffee. From the moment I first tried it (doused with milk and three sugars), I just fell in love. I loved that it could keep me alert throughout the day and having just a few sips of it could instantly put me in a better mood, which was awesome. But you know what? While I understand that this tasty beverage has a lot of benefits, like improving your energy levels and reducing the risk of cancer, I’ve also noticed that people tend to treat it like it’s the air they breathe. And that’s just ridiculous, because coffee is just coffee.
I’ll admit that I was one of those people who actually saw coffee as the one magical beverage that could make all of my problems go away (well, at least for 10 minutes). But now, I just see it as a tasty, temporary fix that comes with tons of side effects. For instance, coffee is extremely addicting, it makes you pee a lot, it can make you really hyper, and too much of it can cause you to have an energy crash later in the day. These might seem like minor side effects that won’t cause any serious damage, but actually, having too much coffee on a regular basis can lead to some serious health problems, including indigestion and osteoporosis. Sounds scary, doesn’t it?
I’m not saying that you should eliminate coffee from your diet entirely (as long as you have it in moderation, you’re totally fine). However, I just feel like there are other beverages out there (like tea and hot chocolate) that are just as awesome and even healthier than coffee. Why should those options be sidelined while coffee gets all the attention?
Check out these 11 reasons why I think coffee is actually overrated:
1. It’s not the only thing that can wake you up in the morning.
There are so many healthier ways to wake up! You’ve got tea, water, fruit, yogurt, cereal, and oatmeal, just to name a few.
2. It stains your teeth.
A lot of coffee on a regular basis will stain your teeth get yellow, which isn’t the best look.
3. It makes you have to urinate really often.
It’s true: Coffee is known to have a diuretic effect, so that means the more coffee you drink, the more trips you’ll make to the bathroom.
4. Too much of it can lead to insomnia.
We all know that caffeine is a stimulant. But did you know that caffeine actually takes about 24 hours to get out of your system? The more you drink throughout the day, the harder it will be for you to fall asleep.
5. It’s really addicting.
I kid you not when I say that caffeine is like crack. It’s an addictive substance that’s really hard to cut off completely, and you can actually get withdrawal symptoms.
6. The acidity in coffee can lead to an upset stomach.
In case you didn’t know, drinking coffee can actually cause indigestion and acid reflux because the acids in coffee could irritate the stomach.
7. It’s usually overpriced.
Guys, one word: Starbucks.
8. It can make you feel jittery and reckless.
It’s good to feel awake and alert, but not to the point where you feel super jittery and hyper. This only makes it harder to actually focus on tasks and be productive.
9. Drinking too much of it can lead to osteoporosis.
Too much caffeine can weaken the strength of your bones or lead to osteoporosis (having really fragile bones as a result of low calcium or vitamin D) because it actually decreases the amount of calcium your body absorbs.
10. It can make you impulsive.
When you drink coffee you get an adrenaline boost, but that energy can turn you into the most impulsive, impatient, and irritable person ever.
11. It can actually decrease fertility.
Believe it or not, studies have found that drinking coffee can lead to a higher miscarriage rate and decrease fertility. Pretty crazy, right?
