The 30 Most Important And Weirdest Moments From The 2016 Golden Globes

In case you missed it, the 2016 Golden Globes aired last night, and, well…. I don’t know how to explain it. Bad? Weird? Random? Terrible but with amazing parts? Boring but also strangely entertaining? As you can see, I’m kind of at a loss for words, because the weird moments at the Golden Globes just made this awards show a huge mess.

I normally look forward to the Globes, which indicate the “official” beginning of awards season, which is fun and also exhausting if part of your job is covering awards season. The Globes are more carefree than the Academy Awards, and they basically serve all alcohol and very little food, which makes for drunk celebrities being candid and real on camera, and that always produces some gems. I was particularly excited about the show last night, because Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling, AND Jennifer Lawrence were all there, and these are three of my favorite celebrities of all time.

While I was loving every moment of Leo, Ryan, and J.Law (okay, almost every J. Law moment), the show was definitely not what I expected. Ricky Gervais, who I normally think is pretty funny, was very disappointing as a host. A lot of the lines were completely bleeped out, which wasn’t cool. The celebrities in attendance were being all sorts of strange, and not always in a good way. It was… well, I’ll let these moments speak for themselves. Here were the 30 weirdest and most important moments from the 2016 Golden Globes:

1. Let’s start off with the air kiss Leonardo DiCaprio sent to his IRL childhood best friend Tobey Maguire, when Tobey gave the intro for Leo’s Best Actor nomination video.

Talking about the perfection that was Leo last night makes me want to genuinely cry.

2. Taraji P. Henson won for Best Actress in a TV Drama, and I’m pretty sure she had more fun than anyone else.

Taraji gave out cookies (as she should have), gave a cute speech, may or may not have been drunk, yelled at the teleprompter for putting the music on, and just generally looked like she was having the best time.

3. Lady Gaga won Best Actress in a Mini-Series and acted a little dramatic.

I mean, I get it, it’s exciting, but she was being a little intense.

4. But even better, she elbowed Leo, who had this perfect reaction.

5. Aziz Ansari was, as usual, hilarious.

Aziz is the host we deserved.

6. Sylvester Stallone won Best Supporting Actor in Movie (Drama) and the standing ovation he got was quite touching.

7. Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt took the stage together and hearts everywhere exploded from love.

I mean, honestly. I couldn’t even speak.

8. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill did a weird little bit that missed the mark.

Needless to say, this first presenter bit basically set the stage for the rest of the night.

9. Speaking of Channing Tatum, can we talk about his hair situation?

I love Channing, but why?

10. Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult very briefly reunited and fans made it into a bigger deal than it probably was.

11. Leo and Kate Winslet hugged because they’re good friends and we all had Titanic flashbacks.

I may or may not watch Titanic later. (I will.)

12. Ricky Gervais made a probably accurate joke about Ben Affleck and Matt Damon felt awkward.

A little background: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner split in 2015 amongst rumors that Ben was cheating with the nanny (so cliche). Ben and Matt have been besties forever.

13. America Ferrara and Eva Longoria made a much-needed statement about Latina actresses.

Yasss ladies, slay.

14. Quentin Tarantino seemed wasted, gave a terrible speech on behalf of someone else, made us all uncomfortable.

15. At least Jamie Foxx did this Steve Harvey bit, though:

16. Jennifer Lawrence was her usual charming self on the red carpet…

As one does.

17. …She was her usual charming self when presenting on stage with Amy Schumer…

Are they the next Tina and Amy?

18 …And then she was very rude to a foreign reporter in the press room and kind of pissed everyone off.

Ick. Why? The reporter was clearly speaking with an accent, and probably needed the phone to read his question. And then the Oscars remark… unnecessary. And rude. Very disappointing 🙁

19. Rachel Bloom, who won Best Actress in a TV Comedy, shared this very real picture:

It's the Sexy Golden Globey Song.

20. Leonardo DiCaprio and Oscar Issac met, inspiring this perfect joke:

21. Amy Schumer did this amazing dance on the carpet:

22. Will Ferrel and Mark Wahlberg were just… weird… on stage when presenting.

23. Ricky Gervais introduced Mel Gibson and it was VERY awkward and Alan Cummings’ reaction was all of us.

As you may or may not know, Mel Gibson has a history of being Semitic, and I honestly don’t understand why he was at the Globes at all. Ricky was clearly not happy about him being there, and the two kind of bullied each other with mean jokes while pretending to laugh, but… the tension was real. Read the encounter in more detail here.

24. Jamie Alexander got annoyed at the teleprompter.

It wasn’t working right, and basically made Jamie and Amber Heard look bad… so, can’t blame her.

25. Katy Perry was there and I still don’t really know why. I don’t think she knew either.

26. There was so much bleeping out it was hard to figure out what was going on.

27. Denzel Washington’s face was all of us all night:

28. Leonardo DiCaprio had this awkward high five situation.

Watching the Vine isn’t even that funny, it’s really just this Buzzfeed post that made me cry literal tears from laughter.

29. The most important moment of the night: Leo winning Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama). Let’s just rewatch his speech, shall we?

30. I mean. That face. It is everything.
