I don’t like to tell a lot of people this, but I’m kind of addicted to making New Years resolutions.
It’s just fun, you know? Something about the start of a fresh year plus the happiness hangover that lingers from the holidays makes me feel like this year, in particular, is finally going to be the one that feels different. I like the tangible, goal-oriented resolutions (changing my diet, deciding to run a certain amount of miles over the year) as well as the frothier, more ambiguous kinds, like “becoming a more caring and attentive friend” and “dwelling less on the negatives in my life.” (Some of them stick and others don’t. I’ll leave it to you to decide which is which.)
It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the resolution that I want to make for this year. I haven’t totally decided on it yet, but since I’m single, they all kind of have to do with enjoying the single life a little bit more. And to, you know, never call being single the “single life” ever again.
So, in the spirit of sticking to things, check out these resolutions that every single single girl should make this New Year:
1. Don’t text that person anymore.
You know the one I’m talking about. The one who you like, inexplicably, despite knowing that they’re not really great news for you. Don’t do it.
2. In fact, you might want to go ahead and just delete their number.
Save yourself a year of trouble!
3. Learn how to flirt.
Not just to catch a boyfriend or girlfriend, obviously–flirt for friends! It’s just fun (And you don’t have any prior knowledge to start–even for noobs, flirting is totally possible.)
4. Aspire to be like one of our notably badass, notably single female role models.
Oprah? Mindy Kaling? Queen Elizabeth I? It’s up to you.
5. Connect more with your friends.
This probably applies to everyone, but it’s a good thing to think about now.
6. Do something that you’ve always wanted to try but have been too scared to attempt.
Again, this is something that goes for all people, obviously, not just single ladies, but it’s particularly apt now. Use the freedom you have from being single to try something totally new and scary out, whether it’s skydiving or just trying out for the school play.
7. Ask someone out.
You don’t have to do this, obviously, but if you’ve been crushing on someone for a while, don’t wait for them to make the first move. Besides, what’s the worst that could happen?
8. Don’t say “yes” to guys who ask you out just because you feel like you should.
You don’t have to. Really.
9. Stop laughing at guy’s jokes if you don’t think they’re funny.
No more fake laughter!
10. Say “no” to dick pics.
Unless you want them. Otherwise, don’t be afraid to block a perp.
11. DGAF about being single.
Worried about being single for all of 2016? Don’t be. To paraphrase Tina Fey, worry about ISIS. Not about being single.
Would you follow these resolutions? Did I forget any great ones? Let us know in the comments!
