Every Halloween, it’s the same deal when it comes to costumes: there are the costumes that are done every single year without fail, the sexy costumes that induce eye-rolls, the wildly creative costumes that impress everyone, and the pop culture costumes of events that happened that year. I think the last kind of costume might be my favorite. There’s something a little bit more exciting about taking a relevant event, music video, or movie, and making it into a clever Halloween look.
Want to try doing that this year? It can be hard to know where to start, but there are tons of ideas from 2015 (so far) that are Halloween costume worthy. Whether you want to channel your favorite pop star, make a meme into a cute look, or act out some serious #squadgoals, there’s something for everyone below. Here are 18 insanely clever pop culture costumes you could only wear in 2015:
Nicki Minaj and Beyonce from Feelin' MyselfUmm, YASSS. This is the best costume for you and your bestie. Grab a one-piece item or bathing suit (you can get this one or make your own), two pink faux-fur jackets, a Bulls one-piece, and lots of over-the-top gold jewelry. Then be prepared to give off your fiercest attitude all night long. Slay, girl. Source
Pizza RatRemember Pizza Rat? It was literally a rat in a New York City subway who was eating a piece of pizza who then became Internet famous because I'm guessing it was a slow news day. Anyway, Pizza Rat really made an impression. If you want to be all sorts of Internet cool, then go for this costume. You can buy it from Yandy, or you can make your own by wearing all gray and carrying a piece of pizza. Bonus: get people to buy you slices all night long. At least you won't be hungry! Riley CurryIf you don't know who Riley Curry is, I'm sorry. Riley is the too-adorable-for-words daughter of Stephen and Ayesha Curry who stole our hearts when she stole the spotlight from her dad during an interview. She is the cutest, and dressing up as her is simple and also the cutest. I love what this Instagram user did, although there are tons of other options out there. Just Google her! Source
The Ariana Grande Donut ScandalHey guys, remember that time Ariana Grande licked a donut in a public store and it became DonutGate? That was weird. You know what's even weirder (but in a good way)? A Donut Gate costume. All you need is a hoodie, a pair of Ariana's signature thigh-high boots, and a donut you can lick all night long. Source
Netflix and ChillArguably the best thing to come out of 2015 (okay, no, that was completely sarcastic) is Netflix and chill. So why not dress up as Netflix and chill for Halloween? I love how this dude kept it simple: a Netflix shirt and a bag of ice. Perfection. Source
Chanel Oberlin from Scream QueensScream Queens is one of my favorite new shows that premiered this fall. The reason I love it is this girl right here: Chanel Oberlin, perfectly portrayed by Emma Roberts. Chanel is every stereotype you've ever heard about sorority girls amplified by about a thousand, and she's hilarious in the perfect satirical way. If you want to be Chanel, you can throw on a preppy skirt and blouse, some pearls, a fur jacket, huge sunglasses, and heels. Oh, and make sure to memorize her epic Pumpkin Spice latte rant.
Beyonce From The '7-11' VideoIf you don't have a friend to do the Feelin Myself look, and you want to be Beyonce without putting on something sparkly and extravagant, go for her "7-11" look. It's comfortable AND easy - and who doesn't want to be Queen Bey for a day? You can buy a Kale sweatshirt like this one in a few places, or you can DIY your own. Add some leopard shorts, knee pads, and a pair of sneakers, curl your hair, and dance around a lot. Source
Taylor Swift from The 'Blank Space' VideoIf any video comes close to being as iconic as either of those Beyonce videos, it's Taylor Swift's "Blank Space." While all of Taylor's looks in the video were pretty much flawless, the most memorable one was probably when she was crying with mascara running down her face. Get the look by wearing a leopard dress or top, bright red lipstick, and curly hair. Then make sure to make your mascara as runny as possible.
The DressHow could we forget about The Dress that literally rocked the nation? Those few days when we all argued about the color of this dress are some of the best days of the year, guys. Luckily, Yandy is selling the perfect costume. Buy this from Yandy
Kylie JennerFew celebrities were as popular as Kylie Jenner was this past year. She went from the youngest Kardashian-Jenner to the one stealing all of the spotlight - yes, even from Kim. Kylie's look, however you feel about it, is extremely popular at the moment, and achieving it isn't that hard. She seems to be REALLY into these suede outfits lately, so wear something like that (or a strappy one-piece bathing suit works). If you can get a blue or green wig, wear that. Of course, try over-lining your lips and using her signature brown color. Add lots of contouring and false eyelashes, some serious heels, and take a million selfies with your finger on your mouth. Left SharkAt this year's Super Bowl performance, Katy Perry's performance was totally upstaged by her backup dancers - specifically, the ones dressed as sharks, but especially the Left Shark. No matter what he did, Left Shark just did not seem happy, and it was awesome. Be Left Shark this year, guys. You'll be so warm. Source
Miley Cyrus from the VMAsI'm a Miley fan, but to be honest, I have no idea WTF she was doing at the 2015 VMA's. At least she wore some outfits that would make great Halloween costumes. There were a bunch of different looks to choose from, but these are my two favorites. Make them yourself by getting creative. And don't forget about the high ponytail.
Taylor Swift Squad's from 'Bad Blood' VideoSquad goals were huge this year, and Taylor Swift's squad was without a doubt the biggest. There are tons of ways to dress up as her super glam supermodel squad with your friends, but the most badass way to do it is to channel them in the Bad Blood music video. Get as many friends together as you can for this. Brit & Co has a great tutorial on how to do this on your own.
The Shame Lady from Game Of ThronesHey Game Of Thrones fans: instead of doing Khaleesi like everyone else, be the Shame Lady. Grab a long gray dress and gray material to put around your head, then walk around with a very stern expression all night. Also, make sure you yell "Shame" at everyone.
Cookie Lyon from EmpireI don't watch Empire, but I've heard enough about it to know it's a pretty big TV show. I've heard that Cookie Lyon, one of the main characters, would make an excellent Halloween costume. Judging from her over-the-top glam outfits, I have to agree. Go for a sparkly, printed dress, a fur coat, perfect curls, and some bold lipstick.
Donald TrumpOne of the most popular costumes of the year is guaranteed to be Donald Trump. You can just wear a suit, tie, and bad wig, or you could go the sexy route with this costume from Yandy. Up to you!
Iggy Azalea and Britney Spears from the 'Pretty Girls' VideoTo be honest, I wasn't a fan of Iggy and Britney's collaboration, "Pretty Girls," but hey... if you were into it, it would make a pretty easy costume! Grab your bestie and do it. One of you can be Britney with a leopard crop top, destroyed jeans, and red sneakers, and the other can be Iggy with a pink unitard, denim shorts, a denim vest, and black and white heels.
Kimmy Schmidt from Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtNetflix premiered Tina Fey's new show, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt this year, and if you were a fan, then you know it's not that hard to dress as Kimmy. Grab some pink jeans, a flowered shirt, a yellow cardigan, a backpack, and sneakers. Oh, and make sure you have a GIANT smile on your face all night long. Source
