Hi everyone! My name is Nakeisha Campbell and I’m the new intern at Gurl.com. I’m 24 years young and I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. I’m a recent graduate of Baruch College (does three years ago still count as recent? Yes, right?) who studied journalism. Since then, I’ve been managing my own blog, Narratives by Nakeisha and I’ve been volunteering as a social media associate with an awesome nonprofit called Global Potential. Aside from that, I spend tons of time either reading, writing, scouring through my social media feeds or binge watching shows that I am WAY behind on.
I am so so excited to be a part of the Gurl community! Here are a few other (extremely important) things you should probably know about me:
1. I have a dangerous obsession with young adult novels.
I want to be best friends with Katniss Everdeen. I want to go on a date with Four and I really, really want to give Queen Levana a piece of my mind. I have daydreams about these fictional YA characters and I get super emotional over them too. Really… The obsession is real.
2. I have an irrational fear of raw fish.
If I see fish alive and swimming in water, then I’m totally fine. But give me a plate with raw fish in it and I swear I will go nuts.
3. I cannot cook. …Yet.
Okay fine, fine. It might be a stretch to say that I can’t cook anything. I can boil eggs and I can make instant noodles. But if you try to get me to cook an actual dish? …Well, what I end up making might not be edible. Just a fair warning.
4. My nicknames include: Nak, Nicky, Nakiki, Nakikamakiki, Keishro and Keish Keish.
The most popular of these? Keish Keish.
5. I don’t wear makeup. Not even for special occasions.
I do this by choice. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wearing makeup, of course, but I just prefer not to because 1) I’m way too lazy to go through the process of actually applying and removing makeup… So much extra work, 2) no makeup saves me extra bucks and time, and 3) I just like my face without makeup on it, okay?
6. I am a bad feminist.
Yes, I believe that there should be equal respect and opportunity for both women and men. I also believe that all women should receive equal pay for the same work as men. But on occasion, you will find this feminist busting a move to songs with some of the most misogynistic lyrics ever. You will find this feminist playing the clueless ditz with some store clerk just to get a discount on some expensive jeans. I am flawed. Catchy beats draw me in like crack. My limited budget makes me do crazy things. In short, as the amazing Roxane Gay once put it: “I embrace the label of bad feminist because I am human.”
7. I have a love hate relationship with my hair.
Being a natural is freaking awesome. I can rock braids, afros, flat twists, twist-outs—the possibilities are endless. BUT, it takes SO much time and energy to maintain! Spending half of my day washing, conditioning drying and styling my hair can be pretty tedious and time consuming, but then I see the end result and I fall in love with my kinky hair all over again.
8. I have a crooked front tooth that I’ve grown to love.
I guess calling it a crooked tooth is a bit of a stretch, since you can’t notice it unless you look really closely. For a long time I was worried that people would stare and find it really weird. But now, I rock this crooked tooth like it’s in style.
9. Sometimes when I see something ridiculous or insane, I like to imagine that I’m in a ‘mockumentary’ and look into a secret camera, kind of like Jim did in The Office.
You know what the craziest part is? I only began to watch the show about two months ago, so I’ve been binge watching the entire thing and now I am obsessed! Seeing these looks from Jim makes think of how awesome it would be if my everyday life was documented.
10. It is my dream to become a famous author.
I don’t have to be the next J.K. Rowling, but I want to write books that will create discussions and (hopefully) impact people’s lives.
So now you know a little bit about me! I’m really excited to be here at Gurl. If there’s anything else you’d like to know about me, you can reach out to me on Twitter or ask me in the comments below!
