Even though we’ve had our struggles, I’m so lucky to have grown up with an older brother. He’s always there for me, he protects me, and he’s a great friend. But I definitely envy my friends who have sisters because I didn’t know what that kind of relationship was like. I was fortunate to have sorority sisters in college, but it wasn’t the same as having a blood sister.
I may have a real sister, but I know you shouldn’t do these things to yours:
1. Borrow her clothes without asking
I didn’t have to deal with my brother stealing my clothes, but I did have to deal with my sorority sisters doing it. Do NOT take someone’s stuff without asking! It’s not cool.
2. Date her ex
I have a friend whose sister dated her ex, and it was a MESS. It literally ripped them apart.
3. Blame things on her
Instead of blaming things on each other, learn to take responsibility for your actions. It’ll cut down on the fights.
4. Lie to her
As a general rule of thumb, just don’t lie to your family.
5. Be mean to her
I know siblings fight. It’s just part of the territory, but that doesn’t mean you have to be mean to each other. Life is too short to be mean to your family.
6. Avoid helping her out
If there’s anyone who you should help in a bind, it’s your sister. I wish I had a sister when I was growing up. As much as I went to my brother for help, some problems I couldn’t go to him with because he’s a guy. Don’t take that sisterhood for granted.
7. Act like you don’t appreciate her
If you have a sister, you are so lucky! You have a built-in best friend! Tell your sister you love her, and let her know that she is appreciated.
