Here’s something you should know about me: I am very invested in my hair and I spend a lot of time perfecting the hairstyles that I feel look good on me. One of my favorite things to do with my hair are beach waves. I am a total beach bum and I spend as much of my time as possible at the beach. My hair is naturally wavy, so the style is relatively easy for me. My hair has natural perfect beach waves whenever I go swimming in the ocean, but figuring out how to recreate that in my dry bathroom has been a bit of a struggle – I think I’ve finally done it though!
Here’s my hair in beachy waves from this past weekend:
Getting beach waves is not difficult at all… as long as you know what you’re doing. A lot of people make mistakes that can make “beach waves” look more like limp, crunchy curls. Awkward. If you want to rock this California-cool vibe, you need to read on. This is one of the best styles for summer and beyond. Here are 8 secrets to getting perfect beach hair that you never knew:
Start With Second Day HairI've seen beauty secrets from people saying they do beach waves on clean, freshly dried hair, but in my experience, second day hair is better to work with. It has more texture and is less soft, which means it will hold the curls/waves better. To me, it also makes beach waves look more authentic. Source: iStock
Use Leave-In Conditioner SprayYou should be using leave-in conditioner spray all the time, but especially before you do beach waves. Beach spray tends to dry out hair, leaving it looking and feeling pretty dry. Hydrate it with conditioning spray. I always spray my damp hair with conditioning spray to get rid of knots. Tresemme Renewal Hair and Scalp Leave-In Conditioner, $4.99, Target
Spray Beach Waves Spray On Dry Hair, Not Wet HairI see so many people use beach waves spray on wet hair. They spray it all over wet hair, then either let it dry on it's own, or scrunch it up, or even blow-dry it regularly. Don't do this! Like I said, beach spray will dry out your hair a bit. When you spray it on wet hair and then let it dry, it leaves your hair looking and feeling crunchy. Whenever my sister does it, her hair never even looks fully dry - it looks greasy. It sounds weird, but spraying beach spray on dry hair produces much better results. Just don't straighten your hair first! Dry it, or use second day hair, then spray all over (not TOO much though). This Bumble and bumble spray is my favorite because it is hydrating and smells great. Bumble and bumble Surf Infusion, $29, Birchbox
Don't Scrunch Your HairScrunching your hair leaves it looking and feeling crunchy, especially if there is beach waves spray in there. Instead of scrunching, do this: if you're starting with clean hair, either let it air dry, or blow dry. Sometimes I blow dry the roots until all of my hair is almost dry, then I let the ends dry on their own for a bit of a natural wave, then I spray the beach waves spray. Then curl your hair. Don't Curl The Ends Of Your HairBeach waves are supposed to be effortless, but they do require a bit of effort. After spraying dry hair with beach waves spray, curl it. Keep in mind that this should not be perfect. Beach waves aren't created with perfect spiral curls. They're made with messy curls. Grab thicker sections of hair, and curl just the middle. Curling the ends creates an actual curl, while leaving the ends out creates a wave that looks much more natural. Sometimes I only curl a few sections. Hold the curling iron for only a few seconds so it doesn't set too much. Source: iStock
Use Dry Shampoo Or Another Texturizing SprayBeach waves spray create texture, so a lot of people think you don't need to add more. But beach waves are all about texture! I always add a little dry shampoo to my roots for some extra lift. My hair has the most volume when I get out of the ocean, so this makes it look more real. BlowPro Faux Dry Dry Shampoo, $20, Ulta
Finger Comb Your WavesAgain, beach waves should look messy and natural. Once you're done spraying and curling, spray a little bit of hair spray, and then finger comb your curls. Using a regular comb will get rid of waves completely, but your fingers just mess things up and make them look more messy. Perfect! Source: iStock
Go In The Ocean!Okay, so this may not work for everyone, but seriously: if you want absolutely perfect beach waves, the best thing to do is to jump in the ocean. Salt water can really make your hair look fabulous. Unfortunately, it also makes it feel disgusting. But, good for vacation! Source: iStock
