8 Things You Thought Were Okay To Put On Your Face But Actually Aren’t

We love beauty DIYs because, well, they’re fun and usually save us a bit of cash. I personally love making beauty products because there’s just something cool about wearing makeup and saying, “Oh this color? I made it myself!” However, we know that there are some DIYs floating around out there that are actually pretty dangerous like that Oreo mascara hack I still have nightmares about.

There are tons of YouTubers and DIYers who swear by using Crayola crayons and pencils as makeup, stating that the products are non-toxic so they’re safe to use on your face! Except that they aren’t. Experts like Dr. Mark Jacquot, O.D., clinical director at LensCrafters told Cosmopolitan, “Even non-toxic ingredients can cause irritation around the eye. It’s like how you can eat a jalapeño pepper, but you wouldn’t want to put it in your eye.” Yeah, you don’t want to put a jalapeño in your eye.

Crayola even added a statement on their site about this trend, “Although our products are nontoxic, we do not recommend using them to make eyeliner, lipstick or other makeup, and strongly discourage their use in this manner. The products were never intended to be used on the skin or face in this manner.” They cited that makeup goes through a ton of testing that their products don’t go through because their products are not makeup. So stop putting Crayola on your face!

DIYs are great, but you have to be smart about what you’re putting on your skin. Here are some other things you think might be okay to use on your face but actually aren’t:

If you shouldn’t use it on your face, you shouldn’t put it in your hair either, for the same reason. Baking soda and lemon juice will strip your hair and throw off your hair’s pH. Mayo doesn’t do anything for your hair except make it smelly.
