Comments Of The Week: Trans* Talk

In case you’ve been living under a rock, sports icon and Kardashian affiliate Bruce Jenner recently came out as transgender. And while it wasn’t exactly a shock given the media rumor mill has been churning out stories about his life and body forever, the announcement was still a pretty big deal.

The two-hour special that allowed Bruce to tell his story was the first time I’ve ever heard a mainstream network break down the difference between gender and sexuality. It was the first time I’ve seen a really great explanation of pronoun usage on TV (BTW, Bruce wants to still be addressed by “Bruce” and “he/his” pronouns, which is why I’m using those here!). And it was the first time a lot of people saw someone they knew as a man come out as a woman. While the special was no doubt sensationalized, it was also undeniably important.

But our conversation about trans* issues should not start and end with Bruce Jenner alone. Our allyship shouldn’t stop with one tweet that ends with #SupportBruce. Our understanding should not be reliant on a single story. We need to always dig deeper.

That’s why this week, we are encouraging you all to talk about trans* life and allyship (And, if you’re wondering why I’m using an * after trans, it’s to include people of ALL non-cisgender identities. Click here for more info!)

We want to build an accepting and open community here at Gurl. And it all starts with you. So check out what these 10 real girls (and boys) had to say about trans* issues. And then let’s dig deeper in the comments below!
