I don’t have any tattoos, but I have enough inked up people in my life to know that the stereotypes against people with tattoos are very real. My younger brother worked in a tattoo shop for a few years during college, and thanks to his free tattoo perks, he’s pretty much covered in them. Despite the fact that he’s a really hard worker and a very smart person with a good job, most strangers assume he’s a “loser thug” with no ambition or a “bad boy.”
I’ve heard guys make comments about how certain tattoos automatically mean a girl is “sluttier.” Uh, what? I’ve seen strangers give friends judgmental looks because of their ink, and I’ve heard others say they don’t take people with tattoos as seriously as they do people with no tattoos.
Personally, I’ve never understood the anger and ignorance surrounding tattoos. To me, a tattoo is body art. I would never judge someone based on what kind of tattoos they have on their arms, legs, or back. It makes me so frustrated when people do, and I don’t even have a tattoo! I can only imagine how those being discriminated against feel. So, here are 8 myths about people with tattoos that are just not true at all:
You Have To Look A Certain Way To Get A TattooA lot of people assume that only bikers, criminals, or thugs get tattoos. That's actually ridiculous. You can get a tattoo no matter what you look like! Tattoos are an expression and a form of art - they aren't a window to your soul or something that explains your personality. Source: ShutterStock
Girls With Tattoos Are SluttyAgain, a tattoo is not necessarily an indication of who you are. Just because a girl is covered in tattoos doesn't mean she's "slutty." And you know what? I don't even believe in that word, so can we take it out of the equation completely? Don't assume that a girl is more sexual just because she has some tattoos. Source: ShutterStock
Certain Tattoos Are Sluttier Than OthersI'm sure you've heard of a "tramp stamp" before: it's a tattoo on a girl's lower back right over her butt. It got it's name from stupid people who like to think that a tattoo there means a girl is down to have a lot of sex. First of all, who cares if she is? Second, that is not what that tattoo means.
Everyone Who Has Tattoos Will Regret Them One DayThe number one argument against tattoos is this one: "you'll regret that when you're older!" Um, how do you know? How do you know that tattooed grandma over there isn't still totally loving her old ink? You don't. So stop telling people how they'll feel about something on their body. Source: ShutterStock
You Can't Have A Professional Job When You Have A TattooAnother big argument against tattoos is that once you have visible ones, you'll never be able to have a professional job. Tattoos are, for some reason, seen as unprofessional and can work against you in a job interview. This is really unfortunate, because it's not true. It goes hand-in-hand with the idea that only criminals have tattoos. There are surgeons with tattoos, Wall Street businessmen with tattoos, even politicians with tattoos. Tattoos don't mean you can't be a professional. Source: ShutterStock
Girls With Tattoos Aren't FeminineThere's a stereotype and myth out there that girls with tattoos aren't really "girly." I don't know where this came from, but it probably stems from the idea that tattoos are for male criminals. It's basically ridiculous. Source: ShutterStock
People With Tattoos Are TrashyAgain, this comes from the myth that only "thugs" have tattoos. Some people see tattoos as "trash," which is just insane. Source: ShutterStock
People With Tattoos Are StupidI think this, yet again, comes from the stereotype of tattoos and criminals. Either way, it's really offensive and rude. Tattoos have nothing to do with your intelligence. Source: ShutterStock
Do you have any tattoos? Which of these myths bothers you the most? What did I forget? Tell me in the comments.
