After almost 10 years of being a dark brunette, I started bleaching my hair blonde about a year ago. Dark blonde is actually my natural color, so I didn’t think going back to that would be that big of a deal. I’ve never been a big believer in all of those crazy hair myths out there, so I didn’t think anyone would see me any differently. I was surprised to find out that I was kind of wrong.
My highlighted blonde hair has definitely gotten me more attention than my dark hair ever did – I get compliments on my hair color all the time, and I notice people looking at it more often as well. Now, this could just be because I have an amazing colorist who knows how to make my hair look great, but studies have shown that blondes attract more attention.
The other difference? It seems like people weirdly believe all of the blonde myths floating around out there. A few days ago, I made a silly comment that didn’t make sense, and someone with me snorted and said, “Must be the blonde hair.” When a random person saw me carrying a designer bag, he said, “Your shopping habits totally match your blonde hair” (WHAT that literally made no sense). And whenever I go lighter, everyone around me always says, “Are you having more fun yet?” I’m pretty sure they’re joking, but guys, I just don’t know.
The point is, there are tons of hair color myths out there, especially about blonde hair. Let’s get rid of some of them! I’m sick of people assuming I’m ditzy or ridiculous simply because I have light hair. Someone’s hair color doesn’t mean they have to have a certain personality. Here are 8 myths about blonde hair that definitely aren’t true:
Gentlemen Prefer BlondesSimilar to the "blondes are more attractive" myth, this one has been around for a while.. long enough to make a movie starring Marilyn Monroe with the phrase! It's silly because it's not true. Dudes prefer all different things, and while some may prefer blondes (just like some may prefer redheads), I don't know anyone who would refuse to date a girl just because she doesn't have blonde hair. Plus, studies have found that it's not even scientifically true.
Blondes Are More AttractiveI've heard dudes say really stupid things like, "all blondes are hot" or "that girl is too ugly to be a blonde," and it really annoys me. You can be attractive no matter what color your hair is, and I don't think blondes as a whole are any more attractive than any other people with other hair colors. Source: ShutterStock
Blondes Have More FunI don't know where this came from. But, I don't know, guys. My life has not drastically changed since I became a blonde. I'm having the same amount of fun. So, this is pretty stupid. Source: ShutterStock
Blonde Hair Is UnhealthyBecause a lot of people bleach or dye their hair blonde (natural blondes are pretty much going extinct!), a lot of people assume that all blonde hair is unhealthy. This is because bleach and hair dye aren't good for your hair. But it will only make your hair unhealthy if you don't treat your hair right. You have to keep it hydrated and use the right products, and your bleached hair can be looking as healthy as untouched hair! Source: ShutterStock
Blondes Are StupidFor as long as I can remember, I've heard dumb blonde jokes that I've never found funny (and I have a pretty good sense of humor). Like most of these myths, I don't understand where this came from, or why people think it. I hate when a girl does something stupid and someone blames it on her hair color or acts like she should have blonde hair. Science has even proven that it's not true! Source: ShutterStock
Blondes Are SpoiledUh.... what? Honestly, these myths are really ridiculous. Anyone can be spoiled, it doesn't matter what color hair you have. Source: Helga Esteb / Shutterstock.com
Blondes Are More NeedyStudies have shown that people perceive blondes as more needy and high-maintenance. I'm assuming this ties in with the idea that blondes are spoiled, but it doesn't leave me any less annoyed. I'm not sure why this a myth people actually believe. Source: ShutterStock
Only White People Can Have Blonde HairUm, hi, have you seen Beyonce? This one is ridic. Anyone can rock blonde hair! Source: ShutterStock
Which of these myths have you never heard? Do you agree with any of them? What did I forget? Tell me in the comments.
