I don’t pretend to like Taylor Swift, but I definitely cringed when I heard that Lady Gaga had given her relationship advice on Twitter. Everyone exclaimed that it was “adorable” and “perfect” advice. As a fan of Gaga, I was intrigued. And I was very disappointed:
@taylorswift13 wow you're a sweetheart! Life is friends, family, and love! We all see that in you, your prince charming will come!
— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) March 2, 2015
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhh. This is not advice. And this is not cute. Not even a little bit. Have you ever had someone say something like that to you? The whole “Someday your prince will come” bit? It’s really obnoxious. People say things like this as if every single girl is just sitting around, twiddling her thumbs, and waiting for some guy to show up and rescue her. Well, guess what? That’s not happening!
While there are probably some girls who do this, it’s not the majority. No one tells guys, “Oh don’t worry! Your princess will come!” Why is it so okay to be condescending to single women? When my last relationship ended, people kept telling me I would be okay and that another guy would come around soon. I didn’t want another guy! I wanted to get back to normal and be okay existing as a single woman. But here are some things you can do until some dude shows up on a white horse or something:
1. Enjoy the heck out of being single.
Wuh uh oh uh uh oh oh uh oh uh uh oh
2. Like flirt your butt off with whomever you like.
Just make sure they’re single too. No flirting with taken people.
3. Don’t worry about impressing anyone:
Do your thing.
4. Treat yo self.
To whatever you want!
5. Spend time doing things you love to do.
When you’re in a relationship, your hobbies tend to suffer.
6. Or take some time to learn something new or pick up a new hobby.
Do that thing you’ve been meaning to do!
7. Hang out with your friends as much as possible.
Uteruses before duderuses.
8. Kiss a little.
Or a lot!
9. Or whatever.
Just be safe!
It’s healthy and fun and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
11. Watch all the shows.
Without waiting for someone else to catch up to whatever episode you’re on.
12. Go on dates.
Dating while single is AWESOME. No pressure!
13. Or don’t go on any at all.
14. Figure out what you really want in a partner.
Think about the qualities that are really important to you before getting into a new relationship.
15. Explore the fact that maybe you want a Princess instead of a Prince…
Maybe you have some experimenting you want to do.
16. Get in touch with your inner self.
Who are you, really?
17. Work on loving you.
You can’t love someone else until you love yourself first.
18. And don’t let anyone make you feel badly or ashamed for being single.
Seriously, anyone who does is a huge jerk.
