December is always one of the busiest months of the year, if not the busiest. Not only are you busy planning for the holidays, but you’re also probably trying to get through finals or midterms, while also dealing with your anxious parents and a slowly dwindling bank account. It’s so exhausting that we can almost forget how much fun the holiday season should be, and everything that we want to do gets pushed aside for the things we have to do.
You should never allow yourself to get so stressed out that you don’t enjoy anything that the holidays have to offer. Every year, I make a list of things I want to do in December to get me in the mood for Christmas. It’s tiring to try to get everything done, but it’s also really fun and always creates such great memories. So this year, I wanted to share some of it with you guys. If you want to have the best December ever, here are 12 things you absolutely have to do before the holidays:
Throw A Holiday Party With Your FriendsWhether you do something with a bunch of people, only your closest friends, or just your best friend, you should celebrate the holidays in some ways with your BFFs. A group of my friends and I have a tradition: every year, we have dinner together the day before Christmas Eve. We do a Secret Santa and keep it as just a girl's night. It's so much fun, and we look forward to it all year. Plan something similar with your friends! Source: ShutterStock
Do Something Festive With A Little KidIf you ever feel like you're lacking holiday spirit, do something festive with a little kid in your life. Kids LOVE the holidays, and their excitement and naive enthusiasm can be infectious. Take your little sibling or cousin or whatever out for the day - go to a holiday play, watch holiday movies, take them to go visit Santa... whatever it is you can think of, do it. It will make both of you happy, and it will be a really cute experience - and definitely an eventful one. Source: ShutterStock
Save Some Time For YourselfThe holidays can be super stressful, and at some point you'll probably feel very overwhelmed. Make sure to set aside some time for yourself so that you can calm down and relax. Do whatever makes you happy, as long as it leaves you feeling rested and rejuvenated. You can plan an afternoon for just napping, or you can set aside an hour a day to sit down and read or watch TV. Source: ShutterStock
Give BackDecember is the perfect month to give something to those who are less fortunate than you. There are a lot of volunteering opportunities, and there is so much you can do to make another person happier for the holidays. You don't need to volunteer at a shelter or soup kitchen every weekend (although that is a really nice option!) to make a difference. You can set aside some money to buy toys for kids from poor families, you can gather up all of your old clothes and coats and donate them to a family in need, or you can find a local charity to figure out some things you can do around your time. Giving back will make you feel great, and more importantly, it will help others. Source: ShutterStock
Make Shopping FunI love shopping and picking out gifts for people, so I actually love holiday shopping. But I know a lot of people who don't love it at all, and think of it as more of a chore than anything else. I also know people who love shopping - except when it comes to busy holiday shopping. If you're not into it, make the experience more fun. Get a few friends together and make a whole day out of it: shop, get lunch/dinner, take your time and do something afterwards. Go with a family member and then go out to dinner after. Plan on going at a less busy time with a friend, like nighttime or during the day on a weekday if you can. Making the trip more enjoyable will be WAY better than waiting miserably on line. Source: ShutterStock
Make A Fun Holiday CraftHolidays and crafting seem to go hand-in-hand sometimes. Try some easy DIY projects this year, like this pretty Christmas mason jar candle holder. DIY projects can be sort of relaxing and fun, and you can even use the things you make as gifts... or just as decorations for your mom. Source and Tutorial
Have A Holiday Movie Marathon With Hot ChocolateHoliday movies are the best. Pick a few of your favorite, make some yummy hot chocolate, and get together seasonal desserts, then get ready to have a marathon. You can invite friends or you can do it on your own. Put aside a whole day or night for this, and by the time you're done, you'll feel cheerful and rested. Source: ShutterStock
Do A Secret SantaEven if you don't celebrate Christmas, you can still take part in a Secret Santa because, well.. because I said so. Secret Santas are fun, and they're also a good way to save money if you have a group of friends to get presents for. Instead of buying something for everyone, you can buy something for one person! Do Something Fun With Your FamilyMaybe hanging out with your family is the last thing you want to do, but that shouldn't be your attitude! The holidays are all about family time, and you should make the most of that by doing something fun. Plan a fun activity or just get together to take a super silly picture for your holiday card. Go Ice SkatingThere's no better time to go ice skating than around the holidays. Everything is decorated and pretty, and everyone feels all festive and cheerful. Find a rink near you and take a friend or significant other, then hit the ice. It's a lot of fun and something different to do on a boring weekend night. Source: ShutterStock
Buy Yourself A Gift For Being AwesomeFind something you love while shopping for others? Who says you can't buy it for yourself? There's no reason you can't! Get yourself a fun present just for being your awesome self. Source: SHutterStock
Bake Something DeliciousIt's basically a fact that holiday baking is way better than regular baking. Get some oven mitts and start making tons of holiday cookies, cupcakes, muffins, or whatever it is your heart desires. Gingerbread houses are always a fun activity, and cookies are always a winner!
