20 Style Tips On How To Wear Turtlenecks

When I heard that turtlenecks were coming back into style this fall and winter, I couldn’t even pretend to be surprised. So many ’90s clothing staples came back lately (crop tops, high-waisted jeans, even bucket hats) that I was just waiting for turtlenecks to make it through. And although I wasn’t disappointed, I was a little skeptical. Turtlenecks can be very hit-or-miss. When they’re bad, they’re SO bad. When they’re good, they’re pretty awesome.

Ashley, one of our writers, has been rocking some colorful turtlenecks lately, and it’s kind of making me want to try them for myself. While I can’t deal with something tight around my neck, I do like loose, sort of floppy turtlenecks in the form of cozy sweaters. Want to look totally on-trend and also totally ’90s at the same time? Here are 20 style tips on how to wear turtlenecks, with outfit ideas by style bloggers.

I like chunkier or heavier turtlenecks with jeans or shorts at the beach and cashmere or thin ribbed ones layered under crew or V-neck sweaters or blazers with slacks or again with jeans.

I agree turtlenecks when worn improperly or the wrong size/cut are fugly to the nth degree.

I chose mine carefully, whether they’re chunky or fine ribbed on the size and shape.

The ones I wear are comfortable and look good on me or I don’t wear them at all.
