A few weeks ago, a woman named Alexandra Tweten created the Instagram account @byefelipe to catalog the horrific–yet laughable–responses they get from men on online dating sites. The account took off pretty much overnight and even landed itself on our list of funniest Instagram accounts to follow. It’s hilarious because these responses are utterly ridiculous, but it’s also scary because we know that sometimes rejecting a man can turn violent. Tweten explained why she created the account:
“My main reasons for creating the account were: A) Commiserating with other women (you can’t be a woman online and not get creepy messages from men); B) Letting men know what it’s like to be a woman online (it’s not all cupcakes and rainbows!); and C) To expose the problematic entitlement some men feel they need to exert over women in general.”
I mean, the account has gained over 100k followers in just a few short weeks. People are noticing, and women are submitting their Bye Felipes all over the place. It’s a play on the popular meme, Bye Felicia, which is basically the expression you use when someone’s leaving and you really don’t care at all. Bye Felipe, in my opinion, is even better.
These responses are definitely super harrowing because they literally come out of nowhere. Some of the women don’t even initiate the conversation and are hit with something rude and outrageous. It’s upsetting to say the least, but it’s also important to realize that women deal with this stuff on a regular basis. Having outlets like Bye Felipe helps us cope with these kinds of things in a way that gives the power back to us. Check out these absolutely absurd Bye Felipes below:
Trapezoid head. Really? What does that even mean?
I have very strong negative feelings for anyone who calls me “babe” and doesn’t know me. And then this guy calls her fat. Cool.
She sent the most polite rejection I’ve ever seen, but nope, he had to go call her fat in order to make himself feel better.
Such aggressive emoji-usage. Wow.
Too much freedom? OH OKAY.
Who doesn’t love the promise of marriage when being asked out on a date and then being called ugly?!
Not wanting to hang out with someone does not make you a bitch so…
Don’t trust anyone who has a poop emoji as their avatar.
Nothing like telling a girl she doesn’t wear enough clothes!
Like, why even send that message? What is your endgame?
I mean, again?!
Oh yes, please call women crazy when they aren’t interested in you. It’s not at all demeaning to anyone suffering from mental illness.
