With sex comes great responsibility. One of those responsibilities is protecting yourself from STDs. There are a lot of myths surrounding STDs, as well as a lot of questions. I get it. STDs are complicated! There are a bunch of them from herpes to gonorrhea. Some have symptoms, some don’t. The whole topic can be very confusing.
That’s why it’s so important to be educated about STDs. You should know how you can get them, spread them and how you can protect yourself and others. Now, there are a few things that don’t protect you from STDs. And there are a lot of people who seem to be confused about how STDs work:
The government definitely won't protect you from STDs. In fact, according to Kanye West, they'll give you STDs: "I think the figure I learned when I was at Live 8 was that there was over 6,000 people in Africa dying everyday from AIDS. But, I said the government administers the AIDS." Oooookay.

Being A Virgin
This is super important. You can be a virgin and still get STDs, especially because you can get STDs from oral sex. Studies show, "Teens who pledge to remain virgins until marriage have the same rates of sexually transmitted diseases as those who don’t pledge abstinence." Some people are born with STDs, and certain ones like HPV is something that guys can't be tested for so they might not know they have it.

Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty has a lot of things to say about homosexuality and now STDs. In a recent sermon, he said "Biblically correct sex is safe. It's safe. You're not going to get chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, AIDS — if you, if a man marries a woman, and neither of you have it, and you keep your sex between the two of you, you're not going to get ever sexually transmitted diseases." Yeah, see this would be accurate if virgins couldn't get STDs, which we already know isn't true.

Say what?! Okay, relax. Condoms DO protect against STDs, and you should use condoms every time you have sex. However, some STDs can be spread through other means of contact. You can contract gonorrhea from someone's mouth!

Big Brother Brazil contestant, Marcelo Dourado thinks that straight people can't get HIV. Seriously, "Earlier in the season he caught the media attention by saying that heterosexual men could not contract the HIV virus even by having sex with HIV positive women because AIDS only affected gay men." You can indeed get HIV even if you're straight. That is a legitimate scientific fact.

According to Michele Bachmann, the HPV vaccine won't protect you from HPV but it will give you a mental retardation. She stated on The Today Show, "I had a mother come up to me last night here in Tampa, Florida after the debate. She told me that her little daughter took that vaccine, that injection. And she suffered from mental retardation thereafter." You guys, the HPV vaccine actually does protect you from HPV.

Neil Gaiman's book, Death Talks About Life, notes that "Life — and I don't suppose I'm the first to make this comparison — is a disease: sexually transmitted, and invariably fatal." Darn, I thought just breathing would keep me safe! UGH. (Life actually is not a sexually transmitted disease, obviously.)
