Fall is tied with summer as my favorite season ever. I love everything about the fall: the clothing, the pumpkins, Halloween, cooler nights, apple picking, watching scary movies, crunching on colorful leaves… I could go on and on. The weather is perfect (just cold enough for a cuter, layered wardrobe, but not so cold that you’re frozen all the time), the food is more delicious (hay pumpkin spice!), and even the air smells and feels better. Plus, October is my birthday month. Fall is just the best!
Today, September 22, is the first official day of fall, and I couldn’t be happier. Even though I had a fabulous summer that was mostly spent at the beach (my favorite place ever), I’m welcoming fall with open arms. There’s nothing I love more than basking in the fun while staring at the ocean – unless it’s wrapping myself in a cranberry scarf and going pumpkin picking while drinking a hot cup of tea. Plus, I think we’re all ready to say goodbye to humidity for the next few months.
So how you can have the best autumn ever? I got you guys. If there’s one thing I love as much as the actual fall season, it’s planning to do things during fall. Here are 18 things you absolutely have to do this fall for the best autumn ever.
Make Yummy Fall TreatsThere's something about the cooler months that make baking so much better. Take advantage of the fall food trends and make some delicious treats at home. You'll impress everyone with your amazing skill, and your food will definitely taste better than what you can buy at the store. You don't even have to have a party to make this stuff - just do it for fun! Candy or caramel apples are pretty easy to make, and they're SO good. I love making pumpkin bread, caramel apple cookies, and apple pies with my mom. The best part of baking? Eating everything afterwards! Source and Tutorial
Go Apple PickingApple picking makes a great date with a significant other or crush, or just a fun day date with your best friends. Find an apple orchard or farm near you - look for ones that do other fun fall activities, like maybe a haunted corn maze or hay ride, pumpkin picking, or even a petting zoo. Pick your own apples that will taste delicious. Then you can eat them plain, or bake them into yummy pies and cobblers. Source: ShutterStock
Take Cliche Fall Instagram PicturesOne of the best things about fall is how pretty and picturesque it is. Take advantage of the gorgeous colored leaves and the idyllic pumpkin patches, and post a bunch of cliche Instagram pictures with tags like #fall, #autumn #leaves. It might be silly, but whatever, who cares? Source; Instagram
Have A BonfireBonfires are definitely not just for summer. Get a date or some friends together, bundle up in sweatshirts and blankets, and make a bonfire outside. You can make s'mores, tell ghost stories, or just laugh and be silly. Bonfires are SO much fun. Source: ShutterStock
Eat/Drink Everything Pumpkin SpiceI mean, obviously. Even though it is 100 percent overplayed, pumpkin spice is still delicious. Forget about pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks - have you ever had pumpkin pancakes?! They're AMAZING. Take advantage of the only few months of the year when you can enjoy anything from pumpkin spice pasta to pumpkin spice ice cream. Go crazy!
Go To A School Football GameEven if you're not a football fan, try attending at least one school football game. I've never been into football, but I always used to have fun at the games. You sit with your friends, flirt with the people you have a crush on, cheer on your team, and just have a really good time! As corny as it sounds, it really makes you feel a sense of community. And the parties afterwards are pretty fun too.
Go Pumpkin Picking, Carve Your PumpkinsPumpkin picking should be an obvious must-do on your fall bucket list. It's one of my favorite things ever. If possible, pick a farm where you can actually pick your own pumpkins. It's way more exciting to search for the perfect pumpkin in a field than it is to walk up to a row of them and choose which one you want. Once you've found your perfect pumpkins, take them home to carve them. Try a different design than just a spooky face. I did this with my boyfriend last year and we had so much fun together. Source
Eat The SeedsOnce you carve the pumpkin, you HAVE to toast and eat the seeds. Seriously, they're delicious. Homemade roasted pumpkin seeds are my favorite things in the world. I buy huge pumpkins JUST so I can have a tremendous amount of pumpkin seeds. Clean them off, toss them in salt and butter (or cinnamon sugar), and roast them in the oven. You'll thank me later. Try A New TrendFall brings about a ton of new wardrobe options, so ditch your summer basics and try something new. Don't just grab your fall clothes from last year - do a little shopping to buy at least two new items you've never tried to wear before. Trying new things is exciting, and autumn has so much to offer! This year, I bought a fur vest and big floppy hat for the first time ever. I'm obsessed with my hat, and I can't wear to wear my vest. Watch Scary Movies On A Date or With FriendsI have a love/hate relationship with scary movies, so I watch ones that aren't REALLY scary, like Scream and Hocus Pocus. Anyway, having a scary movie date night (with a cute dude or your BFFs) is always a good time. And there's no better time for this than around Halloween. Source: ShutterStock
Eat All The Halloween CandyI went into the store the other day and was ambushed by a ton of Halloween candy. YES PLEASE. Wait until the day after Halloween, then raid the stores for all of their super cheap pumpkin-shaped chocolates. You're welcome.
Go To The Arboretum or Go On A HikeThis might sound lame, but it would make a perfect date. Fall foliage is gorgeous, and it doesn't last long, so take advantage of it while it's around. Go for a hike or walk, or if there's an arboretum near you, go there. Pack a picnic lunch and a big blanket and get cozy. Source: ShutterStock
Go To A Haunted HouseI hate scary movies, but I'm obsessed with haunted houses and hayrides. Go to at least one before Halloween. These are most fun when you go with a group of friends. My friends and I always do a night where we scare ourselves at haunted houses, then have sleepovers because we're terrified. Source; ShutterStock
DIY Your Halloween CostumeMake your own Halloween costume instead of buying one that at least one other person will be wearing. We've been putting up tons of ideas, like fun and unique costumes no one else will think of, '90s movie character costumes, Harry Potter costumes, and original cartoon characters. Check 'em out for inspiration! Source
Plan A Halloween PartyInstead of relying on someone else to come up with awesome Halloween plans, make your own. Plan a Halloween party with friends at your house or someone else's place. Make treats, tell everyone to wear costumes, and do some old-fashioned apple bobbing. Invite everyone you like and get ready for an awesome night. Buzzfeed has some great Halloween party tips here
Drink Warm Apple CiderThis is on here soley because warm apple cider is delicious. Caramel apple cider is even better. Get a steaming cup of this and sit outside in the leaves, and you'll basically feel like you ARE fall. Source: ShutterStock
Volunteer For ThanksgivingThanksgiving season is the beginning of the holiday season, so take your time to give back. Volunteer at a shelter or soup kitchen if you have the time - it makes you feel good and looks great on your resume. If you really don't have time, at least collect and donate food, coats, or warm clothing for people in need. Source: ShutterStock
Plan A FriendsgivingA Friendsgiving is exactly what it sounds like - Thanksgiving with your friends! Get all of your besties together and plan a night where you have your own Thanksgiving. Everyone should bring one dish (either homemade or storebrought, who cares?), and then you can all hang out and enjoy yourselves. My friends and I are doing this this year, and I can't wait.
What’s your favorite thing about fall? Which of these things are you most excited to do? What did I forget to include? Tell me in the comments!
