Halloween is my favorite holiday ever, and the ‘90s have so far been my favorite decade ever. I know a ton of people who feel exactly the same way, so why not combine the two? Better yet, why not throw some of our favorite ’90s movies into the mix as well? When you add all three together, along with some DIY action, you’re left with a seriously amazing Halloween costume that only true ’90s fans will appreciate.
Last year, I ditched the store-bought costumes and instead put something together myself to be Cher from Clueless, one of the best movies out there, hands down. It was easily my favorite costume since I’ve been a kid, and although it didn’t necessarily end up being cheaper, it was way more fun to make and wear. I wish I could be Cher again this year!
Want to create your own costume that will impress every other nostalgia geek out there? Here are 15 ’90s movie character DIY Halloween costumes you need to try:
Wednesday Addams from The Addams FamilyWednesday Addams is such an easy costume to recreate, and it's just creepy enough for Halloween. Grab black tights, black combat boots, a black dress, a white collared shirt, and a cross necklace. You obviously need to add braided pigtails as well. The best thing is that you probably already have most of this stuff in your room. Source
Blanky from The Brave Little ToasterEven though The Brave Little Toaster creeped me out, it was still one of my childhood favorites. This costume is genius. You are literally wrapping yourself in a blanket, so you'll be warm and comfy all night. Made the "head" using cardboard and a white sheet, and get creative. Source
Corey from Empire RecordsThis costume should be really easy to recreate, and it's perfect if you're a big fan of this movie. Get a blue cropped sweater (which shouldn't be hard to find right now), a plaid skirt, knee socks, and chunky black shoes. Add some buttons and you're good to go. Source
Mia Wallace from Pulp FictionPulp Fiction is celebrating 20 years this month, so you'll probably see a lot of Mia's out there, but if she's one of your favorites, who cares? Make this with skinny black capris, black heels, a white button down, black tank top and a short black wig. And please carry around a candy cigarette instead of a real one. If you want to get gory, add the blood, otherwise you can skip it. Source
Lola Bunny from Space JamLola Bunny was one of my cartoon heroes in the '90s. You can get her look in Space Jam with white basketball shorts, a white jersey (craft it up if you want), white sneakers and socks, white gloves, and bunny ears. Carry around a basketball to really drive your point home. Source
Cher from CluelessThis is me as Cher last year! I found a sweater vest on Amazon and went from there. All you need is a plaid skirt, a white button down, knee socks, black Mary-Janes, and maybe some shopping bags. You can choose a sweater vest or a blazer - I thought the vest looked more '90s. Source
Mrs. DoubtfirePay homage to Robin Williams in this amazing Mrs. Doubtfire costume. You'll need a black pencil skirt, a white button down (burn it when it's not on you please), a gray wig, boring shoes, and a pair of glasses. Source and Tutorial
Roxanne from A Goofy MovieIf you want to grab a best friend to be involved with this costume too, one of you can be Roxanne and one of you can be Stacey. Or, you can just be one of them on your own! To be Roxanne, you'll just need denim shorts, a blue t-shirt, white sneakers, and a red wig to be authentic. Then paint on a little brown nose! Stacey is a little more complicated - red pants, red shirt, blue sweater, a hat and glasses. Source
Ace VenturaI realize this is a dude, but girls can be Ace Ventura too! This is such a fun costume and will definitely get you compliments. Wear a ridiculously patterned button down, men's boxers, a tutu, and black shoes. Make sure to do something to make your hair look crazy too. Source
Wayne and Garth from Wayne's WorldGrab a BFF or your significant other and dress up as Wayne and Garth. Or just be one of them on your own! For Wayne, all you need is ripped jeans, a black tee, sneakers and a hat. For Garth, you'll need ripped jeans, sneakers, a graphic tee, a plaid shirt, glasses, and some hair gel. Either way, you'll be totally comfortable and everyone will be like OMG. Source
Romy and Michele from Romy and Michele's High School ReunionThis one is best done with a BFF, but you can do it alone if you choose. You also don't need to make your costumes quite this elaborate if that's not possible. You'll need a gaudy pink dress for Michele, and a gaudy blue one for Romy. Add high heels and nametags. Get really creative with a huge '90s cell phone. Source
Forest GumpForest Gump is such an easy, comfy costume. Put on running shorts, a yellow t-shirt, sneakers, and a crazy fake beard/mustache thing, and you're good to go. Source
Edward ScissorhandsThis is a fun one because you get to play around with makeup a lot, which is something you can really only take advantage of on Halloween. Get black pants, a white button-down, and suspenders. You'll probably need to buy some claws for your hands, or you can tape scissors to them (which seems incredibly dangerous). Then get creative with your makeup! Source
Elliot from E.T.I know E.T. is an '80s movie, but if you grew up in the '90s, you watched it (and were probably terrified of it). Elliot is an easy costume - jeans and a red hoodie. You can get creative and DIY this awesome ET in a basket thing if you want! Source
Zenon from Zenon: Girl Of The 21st CenturyThis is amazing! Grab a BFF to do Zenon and Nebula. Or you can just be Zenon on your own! You'll need metallic skirts, colorful tights, shirts and vests, and some serious platform flip-flops. Guys, I'm sure you could find all of this at American Apparel, to be honest. Source
