Boy Meets World has been one of my favorite sitcoms since I was a kid. Growing up, I had a major crush on Shawn, wanted to actually be Topanga, and desperately needed to be best friends with Eric. I imagined life with Mr. Feeney as my teacher or Cory as my friend. I still love watching re-runs today, and I was so excited when I heard about Girl Meets World.
So obviously, I’m really interested in trivia about the show. Behind-the-scenes information on stuff like this is always so cool. If you’re a fan of the show and all of it’s amazing characters, you’ll definitely want to check this out. Here are 15 crazy, interesting facts about Boy Meets World you never knew:
Topanga Wasn't Supposed To Stick AroundTopanga is arguably the most memorable character from Boy Meets World, so it's really surprising to hear that she wasn't even supposed to be a recurring character. If you remember the beginning of the show, Topanga was originally introduced as a hippie, new-age girl who didn't have much relevance. She became so popular that she stuck around. Thank God!
Lots of Celebs Made An AppearanceA bunch of different celebrities had small roles on Boy Meets World before they were really famous. Brittany Murphy once played Topanga's annoying best friend who helped get Cory and Topanga together! American Beauty star Mena Suvari played a character hitting on Cory in Season 3. Adam Scott played a bully for two seasons. Buffy The Vampire Slayer actresses Julie Benz and Charisma Carpenter also made appearances.
It's Been On TV ForeverBoy Meets World is the only TGIF sitcom show to run on TV, in some way, since it's series end date. Since the show has ended, you've been able to watch reruns on the Disney Channel, ABC Family, and MTV. Long live Boy Meets World!
A Few Episodes Are Banned From Disney ThoughAlthough the series has run on the Disney Channel, a few episodes were banned because they discussed teen drinking and pre-martial sex. You know, typical Disney stuff. These episodes are Prom-ises Prom-ises, If You Can't Be With The One You Love..., and The Truth About Honesty.
Cory's Real Name Is...In the last season of the show, Cory revealed a true gem: his real name. Guys, it's Cornelius. How adorable is that?? He also joked that when he had kids with Topanga, he would give them similarly amazing names, specifically Chewbacca and Plankton. Well, that would have been great, but it obviously didn't happen.
We Never Found Out How Cory and Topanga MetYou would think that we would know how one of the most important TV couples ever met... but we don't. Throughout the series, there were a few different times where they mentioned how Cory and Topanga met, but it's never been the same story. So, we have no idea which is true... if any of them are.
The Show Was Supposed To Have A Different PlotBoy Meets World is a show about a kid (Cory) making his way through life with his best friends, his girlfriend, his teacher and his family. But originally, it was supposed to be much more simple than that. It was just supposed to be about a kid who lived next to his school principal. I can see how that would make an awkward, funny show, but how it turned out is much better.
Cory Was Supposed To Have Another BFFIt's hard to imagine Cory being best friends with anyone BUT Shawn, but it was supposed to happen. In the first season, the creators and writers wanted Cory to have a second best friend... but they didn't like how any of the actors they hired worked out. These actors always sat in the same char in the same spot in the cafeteria. Because of this, the cast started calling it "the death chair." Because no one ever stuck! Get it?? You'll also notice that Shawn once mentioned that he has a sister, but he never actually has one. Rider Strong has said in interviews that the line was meant for Cory's second best friend who was fired, so they were just given to him.
Shawn Was Supposed To Have A Brother Named EddieThroughout the show, Shawn has mentioned a half-brother named Eddie. Eddie even made an appearance once where he stole a bunch of stuff and was generally just really mean to Shawn. But then he's gone, and doesn't reappear for two more seasons... as Jack, played by a different actor (Matthew Lawrence). I mean, whatever. Jack is hot.
The High School Is Used In Many MoviesIf John Marshall High School (where a lot of the show takes place) looks familiar, that's because it's been used often as a set for movies and shows. You may have seen it in The Wonder Years, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Pretty In Pink or Transformers.
Mr. Feeny and Dean Bolander Are Married In Real LifeRemember when Mr. Feeny and Dean Bolander got married on the show? They're married in real life! How cute is that romance?
Jack Is Actually Younger Than ShawnOkay, by that I mean the actor who plays Jack, Matthew Lawrence, is younger than the actor who plays Shawn, Rider Strong, in real life. It's just two months, but still. He plays his older brother in the show!
Shawn Almost Left In The Fifth SeasonRider Strong wanted to quit Boy Meets World around the fifth season because he wanted to go to college. That's really admirable and awesome, but I'm so glad he worked out a deal with the creator. They made a schedule so that he could go to school, and he stayed on the show. I can't imagine Boy Meets World without Shawn!
Rider Strong Stole That Leather JacketOne of my favorite images of Shawn is him in that leather jacket. So dreamy. Well, Rider Strong loved it so much that he didn't want to return it... he took it to New York with him, where he got stolen out of his car. Poor Rider.
Another Actress Was Supposed To Play TopangaDanielle Fishel makes the best Topanga ever (she couldn't be replaced), but she originally was not supposed to be Topanga. She was cast as a guest star on the pilot, but the actress hired to play Topanga wasn't working out... so she ended up winning the role.
