Growing up, Full House was my favorite show of all time. I liked cartoons like other kids, but when it came to TV, my one true love was Full House. I was obsessed with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who quickly became the idols I would look up to even today. I loved the characters, I wanted Uncle Jesse to be my uncle, and I wished for an older sister like DJ. When Full House went off the air, I cried so badly that my mom was actually alarmed. It wasn’t until she assured me I could still watch reruns that I started to calm down.
So obviously, I loved putting together this post of facts all about one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. Researching this stuff and looking at stills from the show made me want to go back in time to when I would cuddle with my dad on the couch and watch new episodes. Now I kind of want to go home and watch all of the old seasons. Here are 15 crazy, interesting facts you never knew about Full House:
There Were Almost More Seasons Of The ShowABC ended Full House after eight seasons... but since it was such a hit, the WB network really wanted to pick it up and extend the show. It would have happened, but Candace Cameron (DJ) and John Stamos didn't want to continue. That's a major bummer, because if they did, we probably could have had more of Full House.
There Was Almost A Full House Movie!Back in 2009, John Stamos thought about possibly making a Full House movie. If that sounds weird considering I just told you he didn't want to do more seasons, it gets weirder. He didn't want to play Uncle Jesse. He wanted James Franco to take that role, thought of Steve Carrell for Danny, and Tracy Morgan as Joey. That would have been... interesting.
The Tanner Dog Is Famous For Another RoleRemember Air Bud? Yep, that's the Tanner dog! The same gold retriever in the show is the one that plays Air Bud. He was actually a stray dog who was discovered in the mountains, and he's been trained to play sports.
Producers Tried To Hide That Twins Played The Role Of MichelleBy now, everyone knows that Michelle Tanner was played by both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (Hollywood often uses twins to play one character because child actors are legally not allowed to work very long). But in the beginning, producers tried to hide that Michelle was played by two different actresses. They listed both girls as one credit: Mary-Kate Ashley Olsen. It took six more seasons before they each got their own credit. The funny thing is, Mary-Kate and Ashley aren't even identical!
Aunt Becky Wasn't Supposed To Stick AroundBecky Donaldson, Danny Tanner's co-host, wasn't supposed to be on the show for nearly as long as she was. She was actually only supposed to be in six episodes of season two. But I guess the producers liked her, because they decided that DJ, Stephanie and Michelle needed a mother figure like Becky in their lives. That's why Uncle Jesse and Becky got married in season three.
Full House and Friends Shared A SetAfter Full House ended, one of my other favorite series, Friends was taped on the same soundstage and set. Obviously though, the exterior shots of the house were located in San Francisco, at 1709 Broderick Street. The set wasn't in San Fran though - it was in Burbank, California. That soundstage has also been the set for Wonder Woman, Homefront and Scarecrow and Mrs. King.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Almost Left After The First SeasonImagine Full House without the Olsen twins as Michelle. You can't, it's impossible. But it almost happened. The twins' real-life mother almost pulled them off the show because she was worried about them missing out on a "normal" childhood. However, the producers gave them a very large salary raise, and she let them stay on... also because the girls were becoming SO popular. I mean, they did miss out on a normal childhood, but maybe that success was worth it.
Scott Weinger Once Played A Different Character On The ShowThe first time Scott Weinger made an appearance on Full House, he was playing a character named Steve Peters in an episode called Sisters in Crime. But in season six, he appeared again, this time as DJ's boyfriend from Spain named Steve Hale. Weird.
Michelle Helped Make The Show HappenFull House creator Jeff Franklin has said that the one scene that got the show on the air was the one where Uncle Jesse and Uncle Joey change Michelle's diaper. That's so cute!
There's A Reason Michelle Is Such A Messy Eater...Obviously, Michelle was played by two different actresses. In real life, Mary-Kate is left-handed, but Ashley is right-handed. Throughout the show, you'll notice that Michelle uses both of her hands to write and eat.
There Is A R-Rated Full House Video Out ThereAs with many TV shows, the DVD/VHS series of the show were released with blooper reels. But that wasn't all that was released - there was also a rough quality tape that leaked online. It includes most of the cast members accidentally cursing.
Bob Saget Almost Wasn't Danny TannerThere's an unaired pilot episode of Full House out there where Bob Saget is not playing his iconic role of Danny Tanner (yes, iconic). John Posey played Danny in that episode instead. He was obviously replaced by Bob Saget before the series went on-air. Nothing against John Posey, but I'm pretty happy the switch was made.
MK&A Got The Role Because of What They Didn't DoI'm sure there were a lot of cute little babies that tried out for the role of Michelle. Mary-Kate and Ashley were picked because they were the only twins that didn't cry during the audition. See? Professional even from the beginning.
Uncle Jesse's Real Name Is Not JesseWe all know John Stamos's character as the famous Uncle Jesse (with great hair and a very nice face). But his real name was not actually Jesse Katsopolis. It was Hermes! True fans will remember that he disclosed this info int he episode "The Legend of Ranger Joe." For the record, I like Jesse a lot better.
And Jesse Wasn't Even Always His Name! Before he as Uncle Jesse, he was actually Uncle Adam. John Stamos decided that he liked Jesse better (good choice), and it was changed.
