You know how we all have embarrassing photos or moments from our past that we wish we could erase and forget about forever? Yeah, well, celebrities aren’t immune to those either – something you would definitely know if you’ve ever looked at old school photos of certain celebs. While some look just as gorgeous as ever, some stars have the unfortunate luck of a cringe-worthy school picture resurfacing.
Take, for example, Taylor Swift. A while ago, an old picture of her popped up online that looks absolutely nothing like what she looks like right now. In the pic, Taylor is sporting very un-Taylor-like cornrows, and while she looks like any other adorable, awkward little kid, it’s also pretty amusing.
Tay-Tay has finally spoken up about the picture in an interview with Teen Vogue, saying, “Everyone’s got some embarrassing photo. My high school photo, it’s like… tragic. My style forever was going to be cornrows. I took my school picture with the cornrows. It really thrust me into understand what it is like to not have anywhere to sit in the cafeteria.”
But I can’t make fun of Taylor too much – I have plenty of terrible school photos to look back on myself, and I’m sure everyone else does too. Let’s talk about it! Here are 10 embarrassing things you’ll do in high school that you’ll regret later. Live in the moment, though, right?
Funky Beauty TrendsWho hasn't tried at least one super regrettable beauty trend? Whether it's a silly hairstyle or ridiculous makeup, we've all experimented with weird beauty stuff before finding what really works for us. In most cases, that's because that weird beauty stuff was popular in the moment... but not so much in the future. For example: when I was in 9th grade, I liked to do my hair in these crazy styles to mimic Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. And if you've ever seen their old movies, you know that that is very bad. Also: body glitter. Need I say more?
Rocking Weird Fashion TrendsJust like beauty trends, we've all rocked some seriously awful fashion trends simply because they were trendy at the moment. Do I look back on my favorite outfit of denim miniskirts and Ugg boots? No, I don't, but back in high school, I was super stylish. We've all worn something we will look back on and wonder, "Why did I spend money on this?"
Getting Involved With Internet DramaAll drama stinks, but Internet drama is the most embarrassing drama of all time. To make you feel better about the inevitably embarrassing things you've put online, I'll tell you some stories of my own. In high school, a site called LiveJournal was really popular, and I used to regularly get in fights with people on there about Lindsay Lohan (please don't ask). Don't even get me started on the shade I used to throw in AIM away messages. Oh, and when my ex-boyfriend and I broke up, I basically made myself look like the most pathetic person in the world on social media. I REGRET ALL OF THESE THINGS SO MUCH. Please think twice about what you put online.
Any Embarrassing Photo From Your Awkward StageWe've all had an awkward stage, even if we don't want to admit it. It happens, and it's fine. In fact, it should be something you embrace rather than feel embarrassed by, because look how far you've come! Depending on how long your awkward stage lasted, you'll definitely have some photos of that moment in time that you will want to burn in a fire. This is one of mine (yet I am sharing it on the Internet for some reason). Why is my face like that? Why is my hair like that? What am I doing? These are questions I will never have the answers to.
Getting A Terrible TattooI really don't want to sound like your mom or grandma, but there's a reason why you have to be a certain age before you get a tattoo. It's because tattoos are permanent, and sometimes we do things without thinking them through all the way, especially when we're in high school. Please do not get one without seriously thinking about whether or not you want this on your body forever. I know too many people who got regrettable tattoos at a young age and had to pay a lot of money to get them removed or cover them up.
The Way You Decorated Your BedroomToday, I see a lot of pictures of beautifully decorated teen bedrooms online... so maybe your room is gorgeous. But for a lot of people, the way we choose to decorate our room during high school is pretty embarrassed. Look at this photo of my room. I have a pillow that says "I rule," and as if that wasn't bad enough, I also have a smiley face poster (???), a Virgin Mary decorative plate that is more at home in my grandma's house than a 14-year-old's bedroom (I'm not even religious), and a lacy, flowery hat (WHY). Not pictured: a tiny teacup set, pictures of Hansen and The Backstreet Boys, and a giant cat poster (okay, I don't regret that one).
Getting Caught Up In Silly DramaRemember how I said Internet drama was the most embarrassing of all? Well, it is, but getting caught up in other kinds of petty drama is embarrassing later as well, especially if you said a lot of mean and stupid things that don't actually make sense. I once got in a giant fight with a girl because she thought I made fun of her sweater (I didn't). It lasted throughout most of high school. It was stupid. I said a lot of dumb things. I wish this never happened. Source: ShutterStock
Being Really Mean To Your ParentsI know, I know, I probably sound like your mom again. But really: one day you will regret all of the nasty insults you continuously hurled your parents' way, even if you felt it was deserved in the moment. I said a lot of really mean things to my mom that I wish I could take back, but I can't. Just remember that.
Caring Too Much About What Other People ThinkEveryone says this all the time, but it's really true. In high school, I spent a lot of time worrying about what my peers thought of me. Now, I really don't give an eff and it feels great. I wish I was always like this! Take my advice: stop concerning yourself with what other people think. Source: ShutterStock
Not Standing Up For Your Friends or YourselfPeople in high school are mean. They'll be mean to you, and they'll be mean to your friends. It's easy to sit back quietly and take it. But it's better to stand up for yourself and your friends. Be the bigger person! Later in life, you'll regret the fact that you never stood up to the bullies. Source: ShutterStock
