Last week, I showed you guys 10 TV shows that ended 10 years ago… and it kind of made me really sad, because I can’t watch any new episodes of those TV shows anymore. That made me want to learn even more about my childhood favorites, which led to, well… this. Facts about some of the best old TV shows ever.
Let’s start with Rugrats. Who doesn’t love this show? It’s about talking babies who are funny, and genuinely entertaining to watch. Rugrats was a really important part of my childhood, and I’m sure many of you can relate. But I’m sure many of us haven’t realized that there were a lot of things going on with the show that we weren’t aware of. Brush up on your trivia, guys! Here are 12 crazy facts you never knew about Rugrats.
Chuckie's Mom Wasn't Always DeadFor most of Rugrats, we are led to believe that Chuckie's mom died when he was younger. This is especially apparent in the Mother's Day episode and the movie after the show ended. However, the earlier episodes of Rugrats make it seem like Chuckie's mom wasn't dead. Guess they changed their minds?
Rugrats Is The Second Longest Nick ShowFor a really long time, Rugrats was holding the record as the longest running Nicktoon (it was on air from 1991 to 2004, including a few years hiatus in the mid 1990s). But in 2013, Spongebob Squarepants beat that record - the show started in 1999, is still on the air, and has never been on hiatus.
The Creators Of Rugrats Also Wrote For Another Popular TV Show...In 1989, Rugrats was created by then husband and wife Gábor Csupó and Arlene Klasky, along with Paul Germain. At the time, these three were also animating The Simpsons. They continued to do that until 1992.
One Of The Creators Hated One Of The CharactersOne of the creators of the show, Arlene Klasky, reportedly hated Angelica at first... actually, for a long time. She didn't like that Angelica was such a bully. Even the actress who voiced Angelica sometimes felt uncomfortable acting like such a bully. Klasky was even quoted saying that she hated that Angelica was so mean, and that she didn't like the character. However, she changed her mind after the movie came out, saying, "I think she's great for the show, I love Angelica." Hmm.
Females Voiced Many Of The CharactersOut of the four main babies (Tommy, Chuckie, Lil and Phil), three of them are male. You would think male actors would be voicing them, right? Nope. All four babies were voiced by females, probably because females have voices that are more high-pitched.
Rugrats Premiered The Same Day As Two Other Nick ShowsThe first episode of Rugrats was August 11, 1991, which turned out to be a pretty big date for Nickelodeon. It was the second Nicktoon, and premiered on the same day as Doug and The Ren and Stimpy Show.
The Rugrats Have A Star On The Hollywood Walk of FameTo date, Rugrats is the only Nickelodeon series to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. The show received the star in 2001 when it was celebrating it's 10th anniversary.
There's a Reason Tommy Is So Brave...You know how Tommy was always super adventurous and brave? That's apparently because he was a premature baby (born before he was supposed to). This is why he's depicted with such a fighting spirit. He's really a fighter!
This Was The First Nick Show To Be A MovieAlthough it's pretty common for TV shows to be turned into movies nowadays, it apparently wasn't as common back in the day. Rugrats was the first Nicktoon to be turned into a movie in 1998.
Rugrats Has A Lot Of AwardsKids weren't the only ones who were obsessed with Rugrats. It had attention from critics as well. The show went on to win over 20 awards, including 4 Daytime Emmys, 7 Kid Choice Awards, and 5 Emmys.
The Person Who Voiced Chuckie Did Another Popular CharacterChuckie was voiced by Christine Cavanaugh. She also voiced Dexter in Dexter's Lab, and did voices for Power Puff Girls, Recess, The Wild Thornberrys, Aaahh!! Real Monsters, and Sonic The Hedgehog, among many others.
Tommy's Shirt Changed Color After The PilotTommy Pickles is basically a cartoon icon, instantly recognizable by his blue shirt... but his shirt wasn't always blue! In the pilot episode, Tommy is shown wearing a red shirt. I'm glad they switched to blue.
