12 Celebrities Who Have Publicly Dissed Their Ex

As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea not to publicly diss your ex, even after a nasty breakup. Doing so only makes you look a teensy bit immature and bitter, even if your remark is funny and kind of deserved. But I guess no one told these celebs that.

You would think that with a super strict PR team watching their every move, insults about exes wouldn’t be allowed to slip out of a stars mouth. But they do… oh man, they do. There are plenty of otherwise well-behaved A-listers who have had some pretty nasty things to say about their famous exes. Listen, I know that sometimes, it’s necessary to say something mean about that dude who broke your heart. But maybe consider saying it privately, to your best friend, rather than to someone (or a group of people) who will remember it forever? Here are 12 celebrities who have publicly dissed their ex, because apparently they just DGAF.

Jennette McCurdy

Earlier today, Jennette McCurdy tweeted something that inspired this entire post. She said, "sometimes I look at old photographs of my ex and I cry because he was so ugly." Oof. This isn't even the first time Jennette has said something about her ex, NBA star Andre Drummond. In an interview a few months ago, she said, "My first kiss with him was after we had gone laser tagging. I stood on a chair… I sort of went for it. But it wasn’t great. It didn’t go great. No sparks and the mouth… the shapes weren’t right." I'm assuming her tweet was about Andre, too. That's kind of... rude. Some people are applauding her, but let's be real: if the roles were reversed, it would be a problem.

Selena Gomez

During one of Jelena's many breakups, Selena Gomez publicly dissed Justin Bieber on The Late Show With David Letterman. Dave said something about how he had made Justin cry once, and Selena said, "Well, then, that makes two of us," while gleefully laughing. Everyone was like, "you go girl!" but I was like, watch it Selena. First of all, if Justin had bragged about making Selena cry, we'd all call him a jerk. Second, Selena just keeps going back out with him, so... her diss is just pretty immature.

Ariana Grande

Ariana opened up about an unnamed ex in an interview in the beginning of the year. She said, "I was dating a boy who made me a different person. And my family was like, 'You've lost your light, you are constantly distracted.' If I waited too long to text him back, it was the end of the world. And it was just a very unhealthy relationship." Everyone assumes it's about Jai Brooks, but we don't know for sure. Anyway, that diss seems pretty fair. She doesn't name names, and she's basically just describing the relationship.

John Mayer

During his interview with Playboy, John Mayer opened up about basically everything, including his ex Jennifer Aniston. When asked about her, he said, "One of the most significant differences between us was that I was tweeting. There was a rumor that I had been dumped because I was tweeting too much. That wasn't it, but that was a big difference. The brunt of her success came before TMZ and Twitter. I think she's still hoping it goes back to 1998." Ouch, dude. Not cool.

Russell Brand

After his divorce from Katy Perry, Russell Brand made a joke about their sex life, saying, "When I got divorced, I considered becoming a monk. When you’re a monk, you’re not allowed to have sex with anyone. When you’re married, it’s one person. That’s one more than a monk. It’s not that different. I’d be having sex thinking, ‘Think of anyone, anyone else.'" I think disses about sex are pretty uncalled for. It's such a personal thing, and something everyone would be upset to hear.

Chris Zylka

When Chris Zylka and Lucy Hale split a few years ago, Chris apparently didn't take it very well. When someone tweeted at him to say his girlfriend was gorgeous, he responded by tweeting, "Don't have a girlfriend. She decided she was too good." After that, he tweeted, "There's a difference between celebrities and movie stars. Celebrities fade away, while movie stars stick around forever." Seems like a pretty subtle dig at Lucy.

Olivia Wilde

At a Glamour conference, Olivia Wilde was speaking, and brought up her ex-husband, Tao Ruspoli. She said, "I felt like my vagina died. Turned off. Lights out... you can lie to your relatives at Christmas dinner and tell them everything on the home front is just peachy. But you cannot lie to your vagina." Rough, man.

Rob Kardashian

After his breakup with Rita Ora, Rob kind of flipped out on Twitter. The tweets have since been deleted, but they included lines like these: "When a woman cheats on you with one man I can live with that. People make mistakes, trust me. I have forgiven numerous times…" He added, "But when a woman disrespects herself by messing with more than 20 men all while being in a relationship with a Faithful man…" Another tweet: "I just don't get how a woman can do that to her body. And your career hasn't even launched yet. I don't put up with sloppiness. LOYALTY." Oof.

Rita Ora

I almost can't blame Rita Ora for firing back at Rob, although it would have been pretty impressive if she just ignored the insults. She didn't, though. In one interview, Rita claimed she never thought of Rob as her boyfriend. She also tweeted, "Rob's d*** was wack, I had to get it somewhere else." Whoa. Clearly, things did not end well.

Ben Affleck

Remember when Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez dated? Well, apparently it made Ben kind of miserable (Sure it did). In one interview, he said, "I should never have got engaged and never gone down that route. I thought I wanted certain things, but I didn't. I got lost and felt suffocated, miserable and gross. Being in the middle of a tabloid frenzy, it became so intense I had to stop and think, 'What am I doing with my life?' I had to smile for the cameras, but I was really in turmoil. I was no longer in control of my life and I didn't know which way to turn. I felt like a hamster in a cage. The faster my legs went, the less distance I seemed to travel."

Jesse James

I'm not sure exactly why Jesse James would ever diss Sandra Bullock - he should probably be thanking a higher power that he had the chance to be her husband - but he did. When Howard Stern asked him who was better in bed, Sandra or his new GF Kat Von D (gross question, by the way), Jesse said it was Kat, adding, "That one’s an easy no-brainer, 100 percent! She’s a vixen, man. I love her." Kay.

Sophia Bush

Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray got together in real life after being a fictional couple on One Tree Hill... and things did not end well. When asked about him after their breakup, Sophia started by saying, "My mother once said to me, that if you don't have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all." But then she added, "At the end of the day, we're grown ups and I actually think what's interesting about it is when people split in a way that's unpleasant, they usually just go on, quite literally, hating each other or the person in my situation hates the other person, whatever. But when you have to work with somebody for another half a decade, you kind of have to deal with it."

i get most of these except for arianas and bens. but overall, i think this was a really good article

  • Lissa

What Sophia said about Chad sounds mature, actually. I mean, I wouldn’t regret saying something like that about an ex. Besides, I’m not big on gossip but I think these two had a really messy breakup.

Same about Ben Affleck and Ariana Grande, they don’t sound immature, they actually sound pretty smart.

  • Nas

I didn’t like this article. I feel as if you’re being very biased because you adore certain celebrities and dislike others. Just my opinion.

    • Jessica Booth

I never said, in any way, which celebrities I like or don’t like. So I’m not sure what you’re talking about here.
