You guys, I am so sad today. Legendary author Maya Angelou passed away at the age of 86 in her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Maya Angelou was one of the first authors who taught me how amazing poetry was. Still I Rise was the first poem I read of hers, and it made me love poetry. I was terrified of it before, like many people are. Maya Angelou changed my thoughts on poetry forever and inspired me. I started taking poetry classes and writing my own on top of all the other writing I threw myself into.
Not only did she inspire me as a poet, she also inspired me as a person. Maya Angelou was an incredible activist for civil rights and for feminism. Despite having never gone to college, she earned over 30 honorary degrees and has taught at schools all over the world. She was also a singer, actor, producer and director. If Maya Angelou wasn’t a jack of all trades, I don’t know who is. In honor of this amazing woman, tuck these inspirational quotes away for a rainy day.
